Additional Information:
To be successful when fundraising from American Foundations, it is necessary to have the support of what is known as a 501(c)(3) organization. A 501(c)(3) is the technical language used in the United States to describe a non-profit organization. For our purposes here the most important thing to know about 501(c)(3) organizations is that the majority of U.S. grant-making Foundations will only make grants to organizations that are designated as 501(c)(3) organizations.
To maximise your opportunities you have two options: you can establish a 501(c)(3) organization in the United States to support you; or you can obtain the support of an existing 501(c)(3) organization, e.g. the American Fund for Charities. Whilst the first option offers the most potential for obtaining funding, it is not one that all charities should consider, particularly as a first step (but if you are interested, further details can be found hereThe second option however, is a viable alternative for all organizations, no matter what their size.
We strongly recommend that you approach the American Fund for Charities, or a similar organization, before proceeding with the despatch of your applications. Although not guaranteeing success, the necessary support of an existing 501(c)(3) organization such as the American Fund for Charities and our experience and expertise, will give you the best possible chance of receiving favourable results from your applications.
