CROSS BORDER TALK

Worldwide Humanitarian Crises Severely Under-Funded

While the Sudan and the tsunami-affected countries are receiving strong financial support, the response to most humanitarian crises around the world remains severely under-funded and neglected. Far exceeding the initial aid request of $3.6 billion for emergency relief and recovery efforts, donors have now pledged an impressive $4.5 billion to Sudan for 2005 to 2007. More remarkable has been the response of the international community and donor governments to the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. The international community has pledged $6.7 billion in aid to the tsunami-affected countries.

Project to Plant 1 Billion Trees

A Kenyan woman who won the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize for helping to plant 30 million trees in Africa has started a campaign to plant 1 billion more.
Wangari Maathai said her project will help fight climate change and poverty worldwide, since trees sponge up greenhouse gases, help anchor topsoil to prevent erosion, and provide cheap building material for homes.
Ms. Maathai announced the campaign, which she hopes will be a worldwide movement, as 189 countries met in Nairobi for a United Nations summit on climate change.

Warren Buffett Leads Magazine's List of Top Donors

By pledging $31-billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the investor Warren Buffett made it to the top of BusinessWeek’s annual list of the nation’s most-generous donors. Just to be one of the top 50 givers meant donating at least $157-million - up from $120-million in 2005.  BusinessWeek’s rankings are based on the amount pledged or donated over the past five years. Mr. Buffett has given or pledged a total of $40-billion, and was followed on the list by Bill and Melinda Gates, who has given $3.3-billion over the past five years.

Alliance supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will give $200-million for vaccines

PATH
is leading the effort, millions of vials of two new vaccines will be bought that combat rotavirus and several strains of pneumonia. Rotavirus is an intestinal bug that causes dehydration, fever, severe diarrhea, and vomiting. It kills approximately 500,000 children per year. By the end of 2007, the new vaccines will be given to children in South America and other developing countries.

Clinton Foundation Brokers Deal for AIDS Drugs

The William J. Clinton Foundation has brokered deals with two Indian pharmaceutical companies to lower the price of HIV/AIDS drugs for children, making the lifesaving drugs more accessible worldwide.
Starting in 2007, Cipla and Ranbaxy Laboratories will make nineteen different retroviral drugs available to HIV-positive children at prices as low as sixteen cents a day, or less than $60 a year, allowing an additional 100,000 children in sixty-two countries to receive treatment at a cost that is about 45 percent below current prices in developing countries. Unitaid — a Geneva-based consortium formed by France, Brazil, Chile, Norway, and Britain — will provide $35 million for the initiative, while the Clinton Foundation will contribute $15 million.

GAVI Alliance to Finance Vaccines in Developing Countries

The GAVI Alliance has announced plans to finance the purchase of rotavirus vaccines to curb childhood deaths in the world's poorest countries.
GAVI is allocating $200 million to enable developing countries to begin using the vaccines after their introduction this year. The funds, which would accelerate the introduction of new vaccines to developing nations by as much as fifteen years, could also save more than $71 million in direct medical costs. See Press Release

New deal with NGOs?

On 22 November Hilary Benn spoke to NGOs at BOND’s Annual Meeting in London. He encouraged NGOs to continue to hold Department For International Development (DFID) to account, but at the same time called for more responsibility when communicating with the public. Running negative stories in the media to grab the public’s attention undermines support for development.
Hilary Benn said: ‘We shouldn’t assume that the public are immune to a barrage of bad news stories or cynicism. For if there is one thing I fear most – cynicism. Cynicism won’t get one child into school, or prevent a woman dying in childbirth. Most NGOs understand this. Some do not.’ Whole speech is available here

Football inspiration for the International Children’s Trust

Steven Gerrard is not only a hero to Liverpool and England supporters, but also to some of the World’s poorest children. Steven has agreed to Captain a “fantasy” football team of International soccer stars to support the International Childrens Trust, a charity that works with extremely vulnerable children globally. Gerrard leads a team which includes Tim Howard, Dominic Matteo, Chris Riggott, Jamie Carragher, Tim Cahill, Scott Parker, Robbie Keane and Emile Heskey. Details of the team will be sent to the thousands of children that ICT support across the world. All the players have generously committed funds to ICT to try to help end the cycle of ill health, low self esteem, unemployment and abuse and the potential criminality that so many children face in the developing world. http://www.ictinfo.org.uk/homeindex.html

AWARDS & FELLOWSHIPS

World's biggest humanitarian award goes to Women to Women International

The 2006 winner of the world's largest humanitarian prize is not a familiar name. However, Women for Women International is a lifeline for more than 70,000 women in war-torn countries who are fighting to keep themselves and their children alive.
In September, the nonprofit received the $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, the largest humanitarian award in the world, besting even the Nobel Prize.  Since its inception in 1996, Women for Women has come to the aid of 70,000 female victims of war in nine chaos-torn countries, including Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan. Women to Women provides emergency assistance and emotional support by matching the women with sponsors, or "sisters," from other countries who send encouraging letters and $27 a month for water, food and other necessities.

BLOGS, BOOKS & REPORTS

American Giving Tops CAF Report

Americans donate a greater share of the country's economic output to charity than do the residents of 11 other countries, according to a new study.
The report, by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in the United Kingdom, found that giving in the United States equals 1.67 percent of the nation's gross domestic product. The United Kingdom was second among the 12 counties in the study, at 0.73 percent. France was last, at 0.14 percent.
Religious giving accounts for much of the difference between the United States and other nations, the study found. About 60 percent of the variation between the United States and the United Kingdom, the report states, is due to the higher rate at which Americans donate to religious organizations.
United Kingdom give a much higher percentage of their donations to international causes, however, with 13 percent of all giving in the United Kingdom going overseas, compared with just 3 percent of American contributions.
The Charities Aid Foundation works with individuals, companies, and charities in the United Kingdom to facilitate charitable giving. The report is available on its Web site.
