CROSS BOARDER TALK
A $3 Water Purifier That Could Save Lives
6,000 people a day — most of them children — die from water-borne diseases. Vestergaard Frandsen, a Danish textile company that supplies water filters to the Carter Center guinea worm eradication program and mosquito-killing plastic tarps to refugee camps, has come up with a new invention meant to render dangerous water drinkable.

The invention is called Lifestraw, a plastic tube with seven filters: graduated meshes with holes as fine as 6 microns (a human hair is 50 to 100 microns), followed by resin impregnated with iodine and another of activated carbon. It can be worn around the neck and lasts a year. Lifestraw isn’t perfect, but it filters out at least 99.99 percent of many parasites and bacteria. It is less effective against viruses, which are much smaller and cause diseases like polio and hepatitis, and it wouldn’t protect backpackers against the parasite giardia. Nor does it filter out metals like arsenic, and it has a slight iodine aftertaste (not necessarily a bad thing in the large stretches of the globe with iodine deficiency). It can be manufactured for about $3, but it needs more field-testing. Only about 100,000 have been handed out, 70,000 to earthquake victims in Kashmir last year.

Red Cross Urges Aid to North Koreans
North Korea should continue to receive humanitarian aid from around the world, despite its announcement that it tested a nuclear weapon, according to Jaap Timmer, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ delegation in Pyongyang.
In most years, North Korea falls short of about one million tons of the food it needs to feed its people and relies on food assistance from other countries. However, the North Korean government has been known to bristle over the aid it receives, occasionally insisting, even in the face of famine, that its people do not need humanitarian aid.

Grameen Bank and Its Founder Win Nobel Peace Prize
Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, which he founded, have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their pioneering use of microcredit to lift millions out of poverty. Founded in 1974, Grameen Bank was the first lender to make small loans to poor Bangladeshis who didn't qualify for loans from conventional banks. Since it was established, Grameen has lent $5.72 billion to more than six million Bangladeshis, provided services in more than 70,000 villages, and claims a 99 percent repayment rate. Yunus, the first Nobel Prize winner from Bangladesh, called the honor "great news for the whole nation" and said he would use part of his share of the $1.4 million prize to create a company to make low-cost, high-nutrition food. The rest will be used to set up an eye hospital for the poor in Bangladesh.

Actor Works to Bring Clean Water to Africa

A trip to film a documentary in one of the driest places on earth inspired the actor Matt Damon to help start a charity to support clean water programs on the African continent. Damon and the production team working on Running the Sahara, a documentary that follows ultra-marathoners as they attempt to run across the African desert, founded H2OAfrica to raise awareness and help programs that provide clean water. He said the water crisis facing the world is at its worst in Africa. The organization will identify areas in need of clean water as it crosses the continent during filming.

Celebrity Sponsors Dwarf Charities
Celebrities who sponsor charitable events and philanthropic organizations often end up drawing more attention than the causes they support.Over all, charities benefit from increased awareness of their causes. But, to take a recent example, while millions of people heard about Madonna adopting a child from Malawi, few knew she also founded Raising Malawi, a nonprofit group that assists other orphans in the country. Debate over Madonna’s intentions, specifically whether she adopted an African child because it was fashionable has been risen.

Some Foreign Charities in Russia Allowed to Resume
The Russian government has allowed 40 foreign nonprofit organizations to get back to work after forcing about 100 such groups to temporarily shut down.
A new law in Russia requires that all foreign nongovernmental organizations must register with its Justice Ministry. Scores of groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, had to suspend after their registrations were not processed in time for 18 October deadline. Many people say that the law is a way for the Kremlin to control and limit organizations that are critical of its practices, but the Justice Ministry insists that it is working as fast as possible to register the remaining groups and that the suspensions are not politically motivated.

Fund for London Bombings Victims Shuts Down
The London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund, a charity set up to help the victims and families of the 2005 terrorist attacks in London, has closed its doors. The group handed out $22-million following the attacks by four Muslim suicide bombers, which left 56 people dead and more than 700 injured.

Disease a big risk from Global Warming
The world is not doing enough to combat global warming, which left unchecked, could trigger a mass movement of people and have serious consequences for security . Experts have said that millions of people in densely populated, low-lying, developing countries such as Bangladesh and parts of China, Indonesia and Vietnam might be forced to move by rising sea levels.
The world's top polluting nations agreed new energy-generating technologies are needed to curb global warming. Energy and environment ministers from the 20 biggest polluting countries have vowed to work faster to control greenhouse. Time is running out to avoid a more than 2 degrees Celsius average global temperature rise over pre-industrial revolution levels and technology agreements should urgently be explored. Two-thirds of the growth in energy demand in the next 25 years will be from developing countries mainly for transport as renewable energy ramps up but oil, gas and coal are still likely to fuel 83 percent of energy use in 2030.
The next meeting of energy and environment ministers to coordinate a global action plan to combat global warming is set for mid-2007 in Germany with the plan due to be set in 2008.

Oprah Donates Debit Cards for Charity
Oprah Winfrey, an American day-time chat show host, has given 300 audience members on her show debit cards worth $1,000 each that they can use to contribute to the charities of their choice. Oprah has given cars and other financial assistance to her audience in the past, but she quoted to say that the debit cards were her “favorite giveaway ever.” She added that she hoped the cards would allow audience members to experience the same happiness that being a philanthropist has brought to her. Audience members can donate the $1,000 to one organization or person in need, or they can split it up among many groups.

GRANTS RECEIVED
Identifies funders who make cross border grants and gives examples of actual funding. If you are interested in similar funding follow the links.

Economic Development

For efforts to re-build Israel's economy and infrastructure in the wake of the recent air strikes on Israeli cities: The Koret Foundation has granted $3,000,000 to be distributed among non-profit organizations in Israel.

Environment

For efforts to provide clean water to people throughout sub-Saharan Africa: Case Foundation has awarded $5,000,000 jointly to PlayPumps International-South Africa (Johannesburg) and PlayPumps International (Washington DC).

Health

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced that it will invest $23 million over three years to enhance the capacity of India's HIV-prevention efforts. The commitment is part of an additional $58 million committed to Avahan the foundation's five-year, $258 million HIV prevention initiative in India. The new funding will support the training of staff at the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) to enhance their skills in project and financial management. More about grant here

Ford Foundation has donated $125,000 to Egyptian Society for Population Studies and Reproductive Health to develop a way to assess reproductive health services.
Ford Foundation has also showed interest in enabling youths to gain access to reproductive health services by granting the Youth Advancement Organization (Nigeria): $150,000.

Thanks to philanthropic efforts, programs are under way in Brazil to vaccinate the population against hookworm, one of the most widespread, and preventable, viral diseases in the third world. The programs were made possible by a $53-million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which, along with the Rockefeller Foundation and Doctors Without Borders, has invigorated the treatment of neglected diseases in recent years.
Hookworm—which increases child mortality and stunts learning, in addition to causing economic harm through lost labor—was targeted because it was so widespread in Brazil. In some villages, up to 80 percent of people are infected, mostly because of poor sanitation.

Human Services

To help save the estimated two million children who die each year from severe diarrhea, the Gates Foundation will award $46-million to develop an anti-diarrhea drug.
OneWorld Health, a nonprofit drug company will administer the grants, which will be distributed to scientists in the United States, England, and Bangladesh for six and a half years of preclinical work and a limited number of human trials. OneWorld said the new drug was likely to be mixed with fluid medications already distributed to children in the third world, as opposed to being delivered as a separate pill or serum. The sought-after drug would inhibit a protein in the walls of the intestines.
Medical advocates welcomed the grant, which is the Gates Foundation’s largest yet to fight infectious diseases. But they warned that curing diarrhea would require stronger public-health measures as well, such as improving drinking water.

For medical research on Sanfilippo syndrome, a disease that results in abnormal cell functions: The MPS Society has granted $130,000 to Children, Youth and Women's Health Services to support the work of Doug Brooks (Australia).

International

Give2Asia and the Skoll Foundation have established a strategic partnership to increase charitable giving to causes in Asia. With a $300,000, multi-year grant from the Skoll Foundation, Give2Asia founded in 2001 by the Asia Foundation to promote private philanthropy will support efforts to generate $85 million for Asia between 2007 and 2010. According to Skoll Foundation president and CEO Sally Osberg, the partnership will enable the foundation to achieve a broader reach in Asia by leveraging the organization's direct knowledge of the region's most promising and innovative social entrepreneurs.

BLOGS, BOOKS & REPORTS
World poverty rate cut in half since 1970
New research conducted by the Fraser Institute concludes that the world poverty rate is in decline. According to the report, between 212 and 428 million people escaped poverty in the past three decades. Researchers attribute these changes to the dramatic rise in economic growth of Asia, especially in China and India. In East Asia, for example, poverty rates fell to 2.4% in 2000 from 32.7% in 1970. Poverty fell to 2.5% from 30.3% in South Asia. Unfortunately, at the same time, the proportion of the African population living in poverty increased to 48.8% in 2000 from 35.1% in 1970. As a result, world poverty is now concentrated in Africa, currently home to 70% of the world's poor. View the Full Report (PDF)
