CROSS BORDER TALK

Gates, Rockefeller Foundations Form Alliance to Spur 'Green Revolution’ in Africa
The Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation http://www.gatesfoundation.org/and the Rockefeller Foundation http://www.rockfound.org/ have formed an alliance to foster a new "green revolution" in Africa that will dramatically increase the productivity of small farms, moving tens of millions of people out of poverty and significantly reducing hunger.
With an initial investment of $100 million from the Gates Foundation and $50 million from the Rockefeller Foundation, the partnership, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), will support the Program for Africa's Seed Systems (PASS). PASS, in turn, will mount a five-year, $43 million effort to improve the availability and variety of seeds that can produce higher yields in the often-harsh conditions of sub-Saharan Africa. The $150 million is described as a "first investment," and both foundations are being careful to stress that success will take decades to achieve. George Soros Pledges $50 Million to Millennium Promise
Financier and Open Society Institute founder George Soros has pledged $50 million Millennium Promise http://www.millenniumpromise.org/ to help eliminate poverty in dozens of African villages.
The gift will support thirty-three Millennium Villages in ten Sub-Saharan countries. Each village has roughly five thousand people and will require an investment of $300,000 a year for five years for the project to be successfully completed. The funds will also pay for practical and proven interventions aimed at meeting the Millennium Development Goals, including bed nets to prevent malaria, fertilizers to replenish depleted soils, school lunches for malnourished children, and treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Pew Charitable Trusts has launched Shark Alliance http://www.sharkalliance.org/default.asp, an international coalition of non-government organizations dedicated to the science-based conservation of sharks. Branson vows global warming aid
Mogul to invest $3B over a decade to promote energy alternatives
British business mogul Richard Branson pledged to invest about $3 billion over the next decade to combat global warming and promote alternative energy, saying that it was critical to protect the environment for future generations. Branson, the billionaire behind the multi-platform Virgin brand, said the money would come from 100 percent of the profits generated by his transportation sectors -- trains and airline companies. It will be invested in efforts to find renewable, sustainable energy sources in an effort to wean the world off oil and coal.

Opportunity International Receives $50 Million Pledge for Microfinance Initiatives
Opportunity International http://www.opportunity.orgin has received a $50 million commitment over ten years from long-time donors John and Jacques Weberg for the granting of microfinance loans.
Part of Opportunity International's effort to mobilize $1 billion by 2012 to help 50 million people work their way out of poverty in the thirty countries where the organization operates, the gift will make it possible for more than five million families to start their own small businesses. The gift will be supplemented by a three-year, $2.2 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation http://www.gatesfoundation.org/default.htm and a $1 million in-kind donation from Chinese computer maker Lenovo http://www.lenovo.com/uk/en/. With the gift, the Webergs join a group of successful entrepreneurs, such as eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and Sun Microsystems creator Vinod Khosla, who are working to build a global microfinance industry.

The Ford Foundation has launched a new initiative designed to empower women in the fight against AIDS
Worldwide, 17.5 million women are living with HIV. Three-quarters of those women reside in sub-Saharan Africa, while in the Caribbean region more than half of all adults living with HIV are women. Through the initiative, Advancing Women's Leadership and Advocacy for AIDS Action, Ford will build on its history of local funding for HIV/AIDS programs by directing additional resources to global efforts that:

• Strengthen leadership by building the skills of women and other groups most affected by the disease
• Ensure equal access to HIV prevention, support and treatment
• Encourage accountability among governments, community leaders, and funders
• Support partnership by finding new ways for businesses, governments and activists to work together
