CROSS BORDER TALK

UN World Food Program Struggles to Keep Up With Rising Costs, Increased Need

The United Nations World Food Program has seen both its operating costs and the needs of poor people in developing countries rise dramatically over the last year. Last month, the organization issued an emergency appeal for donations to cover a shortfall of more than $500 million — a figure likely to increase. If the organization is unable to cover the shortfall, say WFP officials, it may have to reduce food rations or eliminate them altogether in some countries.
The most vulnerable populations are found in countries like Sudan, where hundreds of thousands of individuals rely on humanitarian aid.
WFP assesses the vulnerability of people in 121 countries, based on criteria such as how much the country relies on imported food; how large the urban population and the current rate of inflation is; and what portion of their income families spend on food. At one end of the spectrum, families in Burundi spend 77 percent of their income on food, while the figure in the United States is closer to 10 percent.

Approximately forty nations have been judged by WFP to be at risk of serious hunger or are already suffering from it. Short-term consequences of the spreading crisis, say officials, could include food riots and political unrest, while in the long term overall health and education levels in many countries are likely to decline.

Ted Turner announces $200-Million Anti-Malaria Effort
Ted Turner has announced a new partnership between his United Nations Foundation and two religious organizations to fight malaria in Africa.
The effort, organized by the U.N. Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Lutheran World Relief, and the United Methodist Church, aims to raise $200-million to prevent deaths from the disease, which kills more than 1 million people each year.
Over the next several years, the churches will help educate their members, who number more than 20 million, about malaria and other diseases aggravated by poverty. The money they raise will go toward the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria and to strengthen the churches’ ability to provide care to people in Africa. The announcement came as many organizations are galvanizing around the battle against malaria. The Gates Foundation, which has poured $1.2-billion into fighting malaria since 2000, has publicly called for its eradication.

Scottish Multimillionaire Plans to Donate $400-Million Fortune
Duncan Bannatyne, a 59-year-old Scottish multimillionaire who made his fortune through nursing-home and health-club businesses, says he will endow a foundation with most of his fortune, worth about $400-million, reports The Scotsman.
“I am going to set up my own foundation to give away my money, and I hope other rich-listers will be encouraged to do the same,” Mr. Bannatyne says. “That will mean I’m not going to die the richest man in the graveyard.’"
Mr. Bannatyne has made a documentary called “Britain’s Rich List: Giving It Away,” in which he meets with some of the richest people in the country to ask how much they are donating to charity.“I believe that giving the money you make away is the best reason for making it in the first place, and that we rich in Britain don’t do enough yet,” he says
