Report: Only a quarter of London Marathon income goes to charity, documentary claims

London Marathon Trading attacks 'stunning ignorance' of Channel 4's Dispatches, which says remainder goes on salaries and 'undisclosed costs'
The Channel 4 (UK) programme Dispatches has claimed that the organisers of the London Marathon gave only a quarter of the money raised by the event to its parent charity last year.
London Marathon Limited, the trading subsidiary of the London Marathon Charitable Trust Limited, gave £4.5m of the £17.8m raised in 2009 to the trust.
Tracing the Marathon's Millions, first broadcast at 8pm on 9th April 2010, will claim that the remainder is "eaten up in salaries and undisclosed costs". It also claimed that one member of staff, which London Marathon Limited refuses to identify, was paid between £240,000 and £250,000 last year.
Nick Bitel, chief executive of London Marathon Limited, said the documentary displayed "stunning ignorance" of charity trading and that the marathon generated more money for charity than any other running event in Europe. The marathon's costs include toilets, barriers, venue hire, staff and rent. He said its costs compared favourably with other, similar events.
"This is an attack on charity trading companies," said Bitel. He would not reveal the identity of the highest-earning employee, but said the person's salary last year included a one-off bonus for saving the marathon £3m by finding a new sponsor without using a sponsorship agency. David Bedford, race director of the marathon, said the programme displayed "a toxic mixture of opinions and half-truths masquerading as facts". A statement by London Marathon Limited said it planned to refer the production company, Blakeway, and Channel 4 to communications regulator Ofcom. This year's London Marathon is on 25 April.

Report: Big Banks Draw Scrutiny for Profiting From Microloans

Microfinance, the movement that aims to help lift the world's poor into better lives, has grown so popular that some of its most ardent supporters are wringing their hands over the direction it has taken, the New York Times reports.
According to Elisabeth Rhyne, managing director of the Center for Financial Inclusion, large banks and finance firms now serve 60 percent of all microcredit clients — a $60 billion field — while nongovernmental organizations serve 35 percent and credit unions and rural banks serve the remaining 5 percent. Indeed, drawn by the prospect of healthy profits from even the smallest of loans, some banks are charging interest rates of 100 percent or more — a policy that many industry observers say compromises the spirit of the microfinance movement. Questions such as what is an appropriate interest rate and how much profit is too much profit have even made it to the House Committee on Financial Services, which earlier this year held hearings focused in part on trying to determine whether some microcredit institutions were exploiting the poor.

Report: Forbes Rich List Has Implications for Global Philanthropy

The richest man in the world is no longer American, but Mexican, a sign of the developing world's wealth -- and potentially foreshadowing a shift in philanthropy. With $53.5-billion, the Mexican telecommunications investor Carlos Slim Helu edged out Bill Gates as the top billionaire, says Forbes magazine. It also notes that Brazil, Russia, and Turkey experienced significant growth in the number of superwealthy.
While America is still home to the largest number of billionaires (403), the growing personal assets in other places could lead to big giving. Experts have predicted India, China, and Brazil could have a boom in splashy charitable donations in the near future.
Mr. Slim himself has pledged part of his fortune to charity, though he has at times questioned the ability of charitable giving to solve big social problems in Mexico. In 2007 he said he would increase his foundation's endowment from $4-billion to $10-billion by 2011. And last year as the recession sapped much of Mexico's philanthropy, he promised to give more to hard-hit charities, according to a Chronicle article about Latin American donors. To be sure, not everyone is plesased by the Forbes findings. The Associated Press reports that some Mexicans argue Mr. Slim's concentration of wealth is bad for a country where 50 million live in poverty.

Blog: 2009 Nonprofit Benchmarks: How Does your Organization Measure Up?

If your nonprofit is not developing yearly benchmarks for its fundraising program, website visits, email and e-newsletter open and click-through rates, start now. Establishing benchmarks helps organizations better leverage supporters, engage activists and keep websites dynamic with compelling content that drives people to take action. While benchmarks should be set realistically based on each organizations goals and year-to-year metrics, it’s always important to know what the average benchmarks are for the nonprofit sector and compare how your own metrics measure up.

Even in this dismal economy, online donations grew 14% and 69% of nonprofits raised more in 2009 than 2008. The study also noted that 49%of online mid-level and major donors visited a nonprofit's website before donating money online or offline for the very first time. 92% of organizations that grew their fundraising in 2009 had an increase in the number of gifts they receive and 43% of organizations that raised more in 2009 had an increase in their average online gift amount. However it’s not all good news. The economy certainly took its toll. 61% of organizations’ average gifts dropped in 2009.

The MacArthur Foundation is a private, philanthropic organization based in the United States that makes grants with the aim of helping improve the human condition around the globe. As well as the United States, the foundation has four offices around the world in Nigeria, Mexico, India and Russia. Grants in Nigeria aim to expand and strengthen the network of human rights organizations that provide the basic infrastructure for a national human rights culture based on the rule of law. Grants support leading human rights organizations, both nationally and in selected states, including Rivers, Lagos, Plateau, and Kano. Grants are awarded only to organizations that define clear objectives for their work and measures of progress toward those objectives.

Joe Saxton, co-founder of nfpSynergy, stands by the comments in the 2007 report. People thought charities would do away with other fundraising techniques and do it all online, he says. But it’s clear now that it isn’t going to happen.
