Ford Foundation to Stop Funding Israeli NGOs

Grant made to:
New Israel Fund | Ford Israel Fund
Grant made from:
Ford Foundation

The Ford Foundation will not renew $20 million in funding for Israeli NGOs beyond the current funding period, which ends in 2013, the Jewish Daily Forward reports.

Administered through the progressive New Israel Fund, the funding has supported organizations working to advance civil and human rights, help Arab citizens in Israel
achieve equality, and promote Israeli-Palestinian peace. While progressive NGOs in
Israel have been subject to increasing political attacks of late, Ford Israel Fund director
Aaron Back told the Forward that the foundation's commitments to Israeli programming had never been open-ended, and that the decision to not renew the funding was due to a
broad reassessment of the foundation's priorities rather than political considerations.
NIF and other NGOs supported by the foundation have come under fire in the past year
from Israeli politicians on the right as well as organizations such as NGO Monitor
and Im Tirtzu, which are sharply critical of nonprofit organizations that question
aspects of Israeli policy.

The announcement notwithstanding, Back said he considers the foundation's
program in Israel to have been a success, thanks to the support it provided to
organizations, including NIF, that have a "hugely important voice." He also told the
Forward
that organizations benefitting from Ford funding will survive the withdrawal of
those funds, and that he plans to spend the next two years helping prepare them to
secure alternate funding sources. While the loss of funds is expected to have a
significant impact on NIF, it will not affect its core giving, which totals between
$10 million and $15 million annually.

According to the Foundation Center's Map of Cross-Border Giving, Israel is the
eighth-largest international recipient of grants made by U.S. foundations since
2003, having received $392 million from 367 grantmakers. Ford has contributed
$40 million of that funding, making it a key player in the world of Israeli NGOs.

Grant made from:
Gates Foundation

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the government of Germany have announced a commitment of €28 million (nearly US$40 million) for child immunization efforts in the developing world, the Associated Press reports.

The funding will be used to support global vaccination projects overseen by the Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization (GAVI) and will help close a $3.7 billion funding shortfall at the organization for scaling-up immunization programs between 2011 and 2015. The €18 million pledged by the German government brings its total contribution to GAVI in 2011 to €20 million and is in addition to its regular giving to the organization, which currently totals more than $8.6 million annually.

The pledges were announced as part of a new agreement between Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Gates Foundation that includes close cooperation in the areas of global health policy, agriculture and rural development, water and sanitation, urban development, and microfinance. As part of the agreement, the Gates Foundation has committed to match any further pledges announced by Germany ahead of the June GAVI Pledging Conference.

- $732 million in cash and in-kind gifts in the U.S., up from $467 million in fiscal year ending 2010;
- $66.8 million in cash and in-kind gifts in international markets, up from $45 million in fiscal year ending 2010;

BRAC Receives $25 Million to Expand Microfinance Model in Uganda

UgandaCategory: Human Services | Development | Health
Grant Amount:
$25,000,000
Grant made to:
TBA
Grant made from:
BRAC | MasterCard Foundation

BRAC and the MasterCard Foundation have announced a $25 million grant to expand BRAC's "microfinance multiplied model" in Uganda.

Announced during the opening plenary of the 2011 Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship, the funding boosts the foundation's support for BRAC's efforts in Uganda to nearly $45 million since October 2008, when it awarded $19.6 million to enable the organization to open fifty-one new branches serving two million Ugandans. Building on a shared commitment to learning and strengthening the field of microfinance, the partnership will enable BRAC to expand the capacity of its Uganda research and evaluation unit to undertake longitudinal analyses of the effectiveness of the organization's integrated microfinance and livelihoods model. That data, in turn, will allow BRAC to conduct sub-sector analyses on various aspects of its program.

Although Uganda has a competitive microfinance market, most microfinance providers are concentrated in urban areas. In contrast, most of the rural poor — the majority of Ugandans — are small-scale farmers who lack access to finance, agricultural inputs, and markets. To date, the BRAC program has provided loans to approximately 110,000 borrowers, training and access to high-quality agricultural inputs to 50,000 farmers, productivity-enhancing services to 124,000 poultry and livestock rearers, and access to basic health services to more than 1.5 million people. In addition, BRAC is working to empower 32,000 adolescent girls and young people from poor and marginal households, providing them with education, training, and access to financial services.

Grant made from:
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced two grants totaling $18.6 million to support the development of rice and cassava with enhanced micronutrients, offering disadvantaged people in Asia and Africa better nutrition and the opportunity to lead healthier, more productive lives.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) was awarded $10.3 million to develop Golden Rice, a type of rice containing beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A — a vital nutrient that more than 90 million children in Southeast Asia lack. Building on previous funding from the foundation, the grant will support efforts to develop and evaluate Golden Rice varieties for the Philippines and Bangladesh in partnership with other organizations, including Helen Keller International, the Philippines Rice Research Institute, and the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. In addition to evaluating the safety of different varieties, the project will work to secure regulatory approval, perform tests on the nutritional benefits of these varieties, and design a sustainable delivery program and plans to apply for regulatory approval of the varieties as early as 2013 in the Philippines and 2015 in Bangladesh.

Three Useful (and free) Fundraising Research Resources

This month Helen Brown talks about resources for fundraisers and researchers that provide a WOW experience: sources that deliver beyond expectations.

Helen Brown is president of The Helen Brown Group LLC, a full-service prospect research consulting firm.  She is also president of ShareTraining, a web-based training company for fundraising professionals.

I just finished Tony Hsieh’s highly-recommended book Delivering Happiness.  It’s about the birth, growth and success of US-based online
shoe retailer Zappos
, and what really struck me about their story was the
way they strive to provide what they call “WOW moments” for their customers.

It made me think about resources for our community of fundraisers and
researchers that provide a WOW experience:  sources that deliver beyond
expectations.  For me, that would be a metasite, or web page that has lots of links
and resources of help to users.  Here are my top picks in three categories.
Many provide US/Canadian-specific information but others, like
SupportingAdvancement have crowd-sourced helpful information from everywhere.

Best Overall Collaborative Metasite

First up I’d like to highlight SupportingAdvancement, a gargantuan site with resources for every department in a fundraising office. The site has free templates, report formats, white papers, and training resources useful to everyone, as well as links to research-specific sites and much more. It’s updated daily and thrives on the generosity of its network of contributors (you can be one, too!) of content and site sponsors.  I could go on, but really, you have to see it to believe it.

AsiaStrategic Philanthropy: a global movement for positive social change, not just
giving to charity

We are amidst an exciting global movement whereby philanthropy is increasingly seen as a strategic tool to catalyze positive change in the world as opposed to exclusively contributing financially to non-profits. On the other hand exciting initiatives are evolving that value the world’s poor not as passive recipients of charity, but as entrepreneurial and creative human beings who can solve their own problems. This movement is about creating impact, about unleashing power to address poverty, about using resources to unlock entrepreneurial potential in emerging markets. To underpin this movement, Credit Suisse and CSR Asia have released “Strategic Philanthropy: Unlocking Entrepreneurial Potential”. This paper could not have come at a better time, with investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, corporations, and politicians mobilized to support entrepreneurial solutions in emerging markets.

Growth of the small and medium enterprise sector in developing countries is the most powerful engine of job creation and economic growth. Yet more than two thirds of SMEs in developing countries don’t have access to finance nor expertise to accelerate this growth. Organisations like Acumen Fund and Root Capital, featured throughout the paper, have proven that providing these business initiatives with access to capital and capacity can make a tremendous impact on poor communities. Besides job creation, innovative social business solutions have the potential to solve particular social or environmental problems in society, like including marginalized groups or bringing sustainable services and products at affordable costs.

WorldwideRethinking Fundraising for Today's 'New Philanthropy'

After 10 years of doing anything, one is bound to come away changed. Time allows for one to gather a decade of experience, fine-tune strategies, champion successful processes and learn from shortcomings. This year, both NetHope and the Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF) Conference celebrate their 10th anniversary -- stronger, yet not too far from their founding ideals.

The conference intends to ask the same questions it has for the past 10 years -- what are the fundamentals of philanthropy? which approaches work? what roles play into financing the public good? -- but in the context of today's 'new philanthropy.' According to its site, GPF defines 'new philanthropy' as the new force for change led by 'new philanthropists' like Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett, John and Tashia Morgridge, Jeff Skoll and Pierre and Pam Omidyar. These leaders are "infusing philanthropy with the same creative and experimental zest they brought to private enterprise."

With business-minded individuals leading this new approach to philanthropy, it only makes sense for the nonprofit world to rethink fundraising. Strategist Jason Saul believes that the market is the perfect place for nonprofits to advance their social agendas, and makes the case in his new book The End of Fundraising. The title may be misleading; he says himself, "(this) book does not advocate an end to fundraising so much as a renaissance."

WorldwideWant to shave 'stewardess' Branson's legs? Pay $650,000

Billionaire Richard Branson's next cutting-edge risk will expose him like never before: He'll have his legs shaved in public to dress up and serve as a flight attendant after losing a bet to a rival airline mogul.

The winner of a charity auction will pay at least $650,000 for the honour, according to Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia.

The Virgin Atlantic founder will hand the razor to one of 160 passengers on a special charity flight from London to Kuala Lumpur that he will personally serve on May 1 while wearing a female flight attendant's uniform, AirAsia said Monday.

Branson and AirAsia' Malaysian founder Tony Fernandes each wagered their new Formula One racing teams would finish ahead of each other in last year's season, promising that the loser would serve as a flight attendant on the winner's airline. Fernandes' team landed two spots above Branson's in the final rankings.

USAObama made $1.7 million in 2010 - and gave 14% to 36 Charities

President may be Barack Obama’s most prestigious job, but his most lucrative is author.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported a gross income of $1,728,096 in 2010, according to their federal tax returns, which the White House released Monday. President Obama collects a $400,000 salary as commander in chief, but received the vast majority of his income from sales of his three non-fiction books: “The Audacity of Hope,” “Dreams From My Father” and “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters.”

The Obamas paid $453,770 in federal taxes. The First Family donated $245,075, about 14 percent of their income, to 36 different charities. The largest gift was a $131, 075 donation to Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit that builds homes near military hospitals where family members can temporarily stay free of charge while a wounded service member recovers.

European Union Tightens NGO Funding Rules

American and British charities, both facing recent reverses in investments, are reassessing their strategies but taking opposite approaches, the Financial Times writes.

Big U.S. endowments that got burned on high-risk investments when the market crashed in 2008 are now taking a more conservative approach, while U.K. organizations are mulling more aggressive strategies as government spending cuts slice into their income.

The Charity Commission, Britain’s charity regulator, is updating its guidelines advising nonprofit groups on managing their investments. Organizations on both sides of the Atlantic are also rethinking their relationships with investment consultants and pressing hedge funds to reduce their fees.

Another of Madonna's charities is investigated amid claims of financial mismanagement

A second of Madonna’s charities is being investigated over alleged financial mismanagement.

Educational charity Success for Kids, which the singer chairs, is being probed by the FBI for ‘several irregularities and suspicious activity’. It is not clear the extent to which Madonna is involved in the investigation but she has donated $671,000 (£415,000) since it was founded in 2001. She has also persuaded a string of celebrity friends to give generously.

The development comes a week after it emerged that the Material Girl had to scrap plans to build a school in Malawi due to financial mismanagement by another of her charities.

Raising Malawi abandoned the project because the £2.4million already spent had been frittered away on needless luxuries. The latest blow will be another setback for Madonna and raises the prospect she could be drawn into a federal tax probe in the U.S.

USAGiving to charity is as easy as finding an ATM

In the wake of a magnitude-9 earthquake in Japan, American charities have kick started a new way of fund
raising: collecting donations via ATM.

With the help of Wells Fargo, the American Red Cross has collected $1.3 million for Japan relief efforts from more than 9,000 ATMs nationwide, the Huffington Post reported. According to national banking officials, this is the first time ATM machines have been used to raise money for charity on a national level.

The process is simple: after logging into the ATM an extra option pops up next to the box that says "Deposit Cash." The machine suggests, "Donate to Charity."

The American Red Cross was thrilled by the experiment, the Star Tribune in Minnesota reported.

"It's a great fund raising tactic," said Michael Brown, vice president of corporate partnerships at the American Red Cross. "Hopefully it's something we can replicate in the future."

Last year, charities pulled a similar move by soliciting donations for earthquake victims via text message. That campaign earned more than $10 million for the people of Haiti, Tech Crunch reported.

Philanthropists must become more tech savvy to achieve greater social impact, says US report

Philanthropy must literally ‘get with the programme’ on technology funding if  the potential for technology to increase social impact is to be fully realised.

That is the conclusion of a new US report “Amplifying Social Impact in a Connected Age,”   from ZeroDivide that works to build technology capacity in underserved communities.

The report looks at the gap between the demand for and supply of technology funding, particularly as it relates to the application of technology for programme impact. It summarises ZeroDivide’s conversations with 41 funders and 13 technology service providers, focusing on recommendations to strengthen the quality and quantity of technology-related grantmaking for social impact.

The report shows while there is overwhelming interest in increasing funding for technology, 68% of participating funders cited “limited staff familiarity and expertise” as the major barrier to increasing investments in their grantees’ technology activities. Technology expertise is still the domain of IT, and increasingly the communications departments, but rarely is there fluency throughout most philanthropic organisational infrastructure.

Participation: Trends, Facts and Figures

Download your free copy of Participation: Trends, Facts and Figures (PDF 2.4MB), an almanac mapping public participation in civil society.

The report, launched at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) Annual Conference, explores key questions around people's motivations for getting involved with charities, campaigning and political activity.

Along with giving time and money to charity, it also addresses other participatory activities including timebanking, ethical consumerism, campaigning and protests.

The Almanac looks at whether there has been a decline in participation over the last decades and finds that the percentage of individuals volunteering formally through groups and organisations at least once a year experienced a slight decrease from 44% in 1981 to 41% in 2008.

The Glossary of Greed

This year’s Forbes List of the world’s wealthiest people is out. On the heels of the global financial crisis, with sky-rocketing food prices, climate change already making life even more difficult for poor farmers in developing countries, with conflict and political turmoil around the world and with a billion or so people going to bed (if they have one) hungry every night, the super-rich are doing very well for themselves indeed. The Forbes List of billionaires has swollen this year to a record 1,210 individuals. On a planet with nearly 7 billion people, just 1,210 people (including 14 in Africa) possess $45 trillion, equivalent to 77% of the world’s GDP.

But the Forbes List doesn’t tell the whole story. It includes only billionaires with publicly traded fortunes. While it does include several billionaires who made their vast fortunes by pillaging natural resources and wealth in Africa and elsewhere around the world, it misses their accomplices – the billionaire leaders of a whole slew of African, Middle Eastern and central Asian countries. The list doesn’t include men like Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi, who controls a stash worth ‘tens of billions’ that he managed to launder over the years using Swiss banks. Nor does it include Egypt’s former ruler, Hosni Mubarak, whose fortune is being estimated – now that he is deposed and no longer being coddled (and financed) by his Western friends – in the tens of billions.

European Union Tightens NGO Funding Rules

Non-government and civil society organisations seeking funding from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF),
will have to prove that they have been on top of their game before they receive the funding.

Without elaborating, the EDF Democratic Governance and Accountability Program (DGAP) manager, Ms Robina Namusisi,
on Wednesday told NGO representatives during an informational session in Kampala that the tougher conditions are recommendations from activities of the 9th EDF Grantees in which EDF is trying to identify the most suitable NGOs for funding.

She said under the new rules, the European Development Fund EDF will disqualify proposals seeking funding for seminars, workshops, per-diems and scholarships for capacity building, unless they are directly linked to grassroot activities for which they received funding.

Giving Green Paper - Response to consultation from Withers LLP

This month the UK Government has published a Green Paper on encouraging a culture of giving and written submissions were invited.  Withers Worldwide have responded and our CEO considered it was an ideal Ask An Expert contribution.

Withers is a global law firm representing a significant number of the wealthiest individuals and families in the US, Europe and Asia. In the UK alone they act for nearly a quarter of the Sunday Times Rich List. In addition to having many high net worth individuals who establish and fund charities, Withers LLP acts for a substantial number of charities, many of which are ‘household names'. They're in the unique position amongst legal advisers to charities and philanthropists in that they advise on both sides of the Atlantic.

Gift Aid reform figures prominently in UK Budget

UK Chancellor George Osborne says these are 'the most generous reforms to charitable giving for 20 years'

George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has unveiled a raft of measures aimed at helping voluntary sector organisations in what he claimed were the "most radical and most generous reforms to charitable giving for more than 20 years".

In the latest Budget, Osborne announced reforms that included enabling charities to claim Gift Aid on donations totalling up to £5,000 per charity without any paperwork, implementing an online claim system for the tax relief by 2013 and a 10 per
cent tax break on inheritance tax for people whose wills include a 10 per cent legacy to charity.

He said 100,000 charities would benefit from the removal of Gift Aid paperwork "to the tune of £240m".

Osborne said he would retain community investment tax relief, which allows investors in community development finance institutions to reclaim up to 25 per cent of their investment in tax relief over five years. This was recently recommended for removal by the Office of Tax Simplification.

The Chancellor said he and Jeremy Hunt, the culture secretary, had been working on "a series of substantial reforms that will support giving, from the largest donations to the coins collected in the charity bucket".

Osborne said he wanted to make "giving 10 per cent of your legacy to charity the new norm in our country".

From April 2012, anyone who leaves 10 per cent or more of their estate to charity will have their inheritance tax bill cut by 10 per cent, Osborne said. "Let’s be clear, no beneficiaries will be better off," he said. "Just the charities. To the tune of £300m."

Ideas for the UK Government's Charity Green Paper

Chapel & York's Executive Director David Wickert gives some ideas to the UK Government about their
Charity Green Paper.

The government asked for comments on their Green Paper http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/sites/default/files/resources/Giving-Green-Paper.pdf

Before I even saw the Green Paper I saw the objections to a minimum 5% per annum distribution for grant making charities from David Emerson, chief executive of the Association of Charitable Foundations  http://www.acf.org.uk   He was quick off the mark and hadn’t a good word to say about the suggestion.

The suggestion that UK charitable grant makers should give away 5% of their fair market value each year is constructive.  Does anyone know how much money is sitting in the bank accounts of grant makers from year to year and why don’t they tell us?  Millions obviously.  However...

Forbes Rich List 2011Online - The richest people on the planet

This year's list broke records in size (1,210 billionaires) and total net worth ($4.5 trillion). China doubled its number of 10-figure fortunes, and Moscow now has more billionaires than any other city. Mexico's Carlos Slim widened his lead at No. 1.

Slim, named the world's richest man by Forbes Magazine, said he's seeking to boost his investments in Colombia because of the country's open policy on oil exploration, its mineral assets and growing middle class.
