Rockefeller Foundation Announces $70 Million Commitment to Climate Change Resilience

The Rockefeller Foundation has announced a five-year, $70 million commitment to build the resilience of communities most likely to be affected by climate change.

The foundation's Climate Change Resilience initiative aims to develop the ability of communities to manage and plan for the effects of climate change and to make sure that planning includes the most vulnerable citizens. Since building resilience requires
actions on multiple levels and scales, the foundation expects to partner with governments, other foundations and donors, non-governmental organizations, and groups from the private sector.

One component of the initiative will focus on Asian cities. According to the Population Reference Bureau, more than 60 per-cent of the increase in the world's urban population in the next thirty years will occur in Asia, which already has a larger urban population than all other regions of the world combined. In addition, a recent study of populations at risk for sea-level rise noted that eight of the top ten countries likely to be affected are in Asia.

Telecom Billionaire Establishes Low-Cost Laptop Program for Mexican Children
Saying that digital education holds the key to a better future for Mexico's poor, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has pledged to donate 250,000 low-cost laptops to the country's children by the end of the year and as many as a million in 2008.
Slim, who controls Mexico's largest telecommunications company, Telmex, said he will focus his philanthropic activities on building specialized preschools, donating computers, and supporting health care, and that he would contribute about $70 million this year to the low-cost laptop program. With an estimated cost of $250 to $300 per machine, Slim would have to put up as much as $300 million for a million laptops, though he expects the costs to continue to fall. His plan initially would put the laptops in schools and libraries, where they would be lent out like books, he said, before eventually being given outright to students. In addition, his companies would help set up wireless networks for students to connect to the Internet.

Scottish Billionaire Pledges £1 Billion for Charitable Efforts in Britain and Africa
Scottish billionaire Sir Tom Hunter has pledged to donate £1 billion, or roughly $2 billion dollars, during his lifetime to charities in Britain and developing nations.
Hunter, who made his fortune in the sportswear industry and is Scotland's richest man, said the funds would be drawn from his investments in shopping centers and profits from his private equity partnership, West Coast Capital, and would be distributed through the Hunter Foundation. He has already committed £100 million, and the time frame for donating the rest would depend on the success of West Coast Capital. Read more Source (The Times, UK)

How Warren Buffett Handles Donation Pleas From Individuals

Warren Buffett receives thousands of letters from people who ask for money for a range of reasons, such as getting a new glass eye or paying legal fees from custody suits, and each one gets forwarded to his sister, Doris, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Ms. Buffett runs the Sunshine Lady Foundation, which has given more than $1.4-million to more than 300 letter writers. The average gift is $4,800. So far, she has received more than 3,000 letters from her brother, who transferred $5-million in Berkshire Hathaway stock to his sister’s foundation.
The foundation is unusual because it supports individuals, unlike most grant makers. The Internal Revenue Service has strict rules on grants to individuals to make sure that the money is used for legitimate charitable purposes.
Ms. Buffett personally calls letter writers she is interested in helping and even doles out stern bits of advice on financial responsibility.
Mr. Buffett says his sister is more charitable than he is, adding, “She identifies with the underdog. I do it in a wholesale way, but not on a one-on-one basis. She really wants to know their stories.
