CROSS BORDER TALK
Calls for new UN body to save the environment |
More than 40 countries are backing calls for an international organisation to police governments that fail to act against climate change. It would also fight threats such as global warming, water shortages and the loss of species.
A report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that rising temperatures could cause droughts, heatwaves and rising seas for more than 1,000 years, even if emissions of greenhouse gases are capped.
Not everyone has welcomed the idea of a global body that would define and possibly enforce environmental rules. Key world polluters, including the US, China, India and Russia, are missing from the list of 46 countries that will be meeting in Morocco this spring to take the plan forward.

Spray To Change Attitudes Campaign |
The Body Shop and MTV have joined forces with the launch of The Body Shop and MTV Rougeberry edt as part of the Spray To Change Attitudes Campaign. Profits will go to MTV's Staying Alive Foundation to benefit HIV awareness programmes for young people, who number among half of all new HIV infections.
The foundation provides grants to support young people in areas where AIDS hits hardest through The Staying Alive Awards, and is committed to fighting stigma and improving education to help prevent the spread of HIV. The launch of the fragrance marks the largest multi-platform campaign and is expected to reach more than 1.3bn people globally through all MTV channels.

Credit Suisse, World Food Program Launch Joint Initiative
in Sri Lanka |
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and financial services provider Credit Suisse have announced a joint food and education initiative that is intended to build a sustainable future for nineteen thousand schoolchildren in Sri Lanka.
Under the auspices of WFP, the Credit Suisse Food for Education program will build sixty-one school feeding facilities in Batticaloa, Jaffna, and Ampara and provide daily school meals through 2008. The $1.5m grant makes Credit Suisse the largest corporate donor to WFP development programs in Asia. In addition to providing food, the program also will aim to increase the percentage of educated women in order to reduce childhood hunger in the long term. See Press Release

Branson offers $25M prize to fight climate change
|
British airline tycoon Richard Branson announced a $25m prize for the first person or group to find a way to remove billions of tonnes of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
The contest, called the Virgin Earth Challenge, will be open for five years, with a panel of judges including Branson and former U.S. vice-president, Al Gore evaluating submissions. The goal is to find a way of removing one billion tonnes of carbon gases a year from the atmosphere for 10 years. The winner will receive $5m US up front and the remaining $20m after the 10-year time frame. If no winner is identified after five years the judges may decide to extend the competition.

| Violence Against Aid Workers Escalates |
| Charity workers in war zones are increasingly targets of deadly attacks. According to United Nations statistics, rebels and government groups in Darfur have attacked 30 charity compounds, hijacked 29 vehicles, and killed a dozen humanitarian workers in the past six months of Sudan’s civil war. In Sri Lanka, 17 aid workers were executed despite uniforms marking them as neutral in the conflict. One reason given for the number of attacks is that charities are sending far more people to dangerous places than they did in the past. |
| British Universities to Model Endowment Fundraising After American Efforts |
In an effort to bolster higher education in the United Kingdom, the British government has announced plans to increase the endowments of such elite universities as Oxford and Cambridge. Under the plan, every two pounds donated to a university by alumni, philanthropists, or businesses will be matched by one pound from public funds, up to £2m ($3.9m). Read full story

| The Conservation, Food, & Health Foundation |
The Conservation, Food, & Health Foundation purpose is to assist in the conservation of natural resources, the production and distribution of food, and the improvement and promotion of health in the developing world.
Through grants to support research and through targeted grants to help solve specific problems, the Foundation helps build capacity within developing countries in its three areas of interest.
The foundation is especially interested in supporting projects which lead to the transfer of responsibility to the citizens of developing countries for managing and solving their own problems and developing the capacity of local organizations.
Preference will be given to projects, including research projects, in areas that tend to be under-funded.
Concept applications in 2007 may be submitted at any time, but must be received in the office by July 1 in order for projects to be eligible for the November meetings of the Foundation.http://www.grantsmanagement.com/cfhguide.html |

| ExxonMobil Foundation Awards $1m to Combat Malaria in Angola |
The ExxonMobil Foundation has announced a $1m grant to USAID to support the efforts of the Angolan Ministry of Health to strengthen and extend malaria prevention and control throughout that African country.
The grant was awarded through ExxonMobil's Africa Health Initiative, which has contributed approximately $30m since 2000 to combat malaria and other infectious diseases in Africa. Since the Angolan Ministry of Health announced the creation of a national strategic plan to control malaria in 2005, several public- and private-sector organizations have partnered with the World Health Organization, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and the President's Malaria Initiative to build local capacity and align resources and expertise to reduce illness and death caused by the disease. See Press Release

| Gates Foundation Awards $7m for Global Tuberculosis Database |
The Stanford University School of Medicine has announced a $7m grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a new initiative that will create the world's largest public database of the genes involved in latent tuberculosis. One-third of the world's population has latent TB, a form of the disease in which the bacterium lies dormant, often for decades. The new database will be made accessible to scientists around the world via the Web and could become a model for battling other disease-causing organisms. See Press Release |

| American giving sets new record in philanthropic giving |
Twenty-one Americans gave at least $100m to charitable causes last year, breaking a new record in philanthropic giving, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual ranking of the 60 most-generous
Americans.
Warren E. Buffett's $43.5-billion donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and several other organizations was the biggest charitable commitment, but even without that money, 2006 was a blockbuster year. Not
counting Mr. Buffett's gifts, wealthy Americans committed $7-billion, compared with $4.3-billion in 2005.
