New European foundation set to become one of the world's largest

Starr International Foundation is set to become one of the largest charitable foundations in the world in terms of assets with a possible endowment of USD20bn, according to the Financial Times. This puts it the same league as the Wellcome Trust, UK, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which have endowments of about EUR18bn and USD32bn respectively.

and around the world. Starr International Foundation intends to be a significant influence on the international scene. Tens of thousands still homeless two years on

Two years after the tsunami struck, billions of pounds donated by governments and individuals around the world has still not been spent on reconstruction.
Tens of thousands of people have still received nothing, major infrastructure repairs have not yet begun and fewer than 35% of people have been rehoused. Bureaucracy, poor planning and the cynical withholding of money by some governments and charities are believed to have caused the inordinate delays in the four countries most affected - Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Maldives.
According to UN data report, about $6.7bn (£3.4bn) was committed by governments and charities to the four countries in the aftermath of the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami, which killed more than 220,000 people and left millions homeless. However, more than $3.5bn has not been spent. Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Iceland, Ireland, Malaysia and New Zealand have spent all they promised in Sri Lanka, but the United Arab Emirates has spent nothing, the World Bank only about 25% of its money, the US government about 50% and the Asian Development Bank less than 20%. China promised $305m in reconstruction aid but has spent $5m. Spain pledged $60m but has spent less than $1m. More info

Gates Foundation Reviews Investments

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is rethinking its investments after a two-part investigative newspaper story criticized the foundation for investing its assets in companies that contradicted its mission, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Los Angeles Times investigation noted that the Gates Foundation has invested in companies that have ties to tobacco, alcohol, and gambling. It has also invested in corporations that are responsible for environmental damage and are suspected of profiting from illegal practices, such as predatory lending and slave labour.
Philanthropy experts are hoping the Gates Foundation’s decision will prompt other grant makers to pursue similar action. (Free registration is required to view the Los Angeles Times articles)

WEBSITES

Change in website requirements
Since 1 January 2007 UK companies are now required to include certain regulatory information on their websites and email footers to adhere to the Companies Act and avoid having to pay a fine.
Companies must list their company registration number, place of registration, and registered office address on their website as well as in emails and on order forms. The information must be in legible characters, so cannot be hidden in tiny or coloured text.
Fortunately, the information does not have to appear on every page on a website, although some organisation might choose to do this. Some charities that are limited companies will no doubt already be following this approach as many have assumed that 'business letters' applied to emails. But from 1 January, following an update to the Companies Act 1985, the requirement will be explicit. The Register has published some practical advice on what to do to comply with the new requirement.
