HSBC Launches $100 Million Climate Change Effort
HSBC has announced a five-year, $100 million partnership with four environmental organizations to respond to the threat of global climate change.
Comprised of HSBC, the Climate Group, the Earthwatch Institute, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and the World Wildlife Fund, the HSBC Climate Partnership will build on HSBC's previous five-year, $50 million "eco-partnership," Investing in Nature, which concluded in 2006. The latest commitment by the company represents both the largest charitable donation ever made by a British company and the largest contribution ever received by each of the nonprofit partners. Kofi Annan Will Lead African Food Program

Kofi Annan, former secretary general of the United Nations, has been named chairman of the new Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, an organization that receives funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates and the Rockefeller foundations.
The organization, in Nairobi, is an African effort to help small-scale farmers throughout Africa fight poverty and hunger by increasing farm productivity and income. The foundations established the alliance in 2006 with an initial $150-million grant. More on Alliance for a Green Revolution


Lilly Unveils Ambitious Partnership for Tuberculosis Drug Discovery
Eli Lilly and Company has announced the creation of a public-private partnership that will focus on early-phase research on new medicines to treat tuberculosis, including emerging resistant strains.
The Lilly Not-For-Profit Partnership for TB Early Phase Drug Discovery will work to integrate medicinal chemistry expertise from the pharmaceutical industry. Partners in the effort include Afya World Medicines, the Infectious Disease Research Institute, Jubilant Biosys, Merck and Company, the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, and the University of Washington Department of Global Health. Lilly has agreed to commit $15 million over five years to the partnership, bringing its financial support to the fight against TB to $135 million. See Press Release

9/11 Foundation Reveals Donor List

The nonprofit group raising money to build a September 11 memorial in New York has made its list of donors public.
The list of donors includes many of the city’s most prominent politicians, bankers, and businesses. For instance, billionaire mayor and noted philanthropist Michael Bloomberg donated $15-million, and Eliot Spitzer, New York’s governor, donated $2-million through a family foundation.
The largest gift, $25-million, came from the Starr Foundation. Deutsche Bank AG, in Germany, and David Rockefeller also have given $15 million each.
The fund-raising group has raised $300-million so far, out of the $700-million it estimates it will need to erect the memorial, two reflecting pools on the site of the old World Trade Center buildings


G8 announces $60 billion Africa aid package
Group of Eight leaders pledged $60 billion in aid to fight diseases in Africa, including battling HIV/AIDS and malaria and boosting access to pediatric care. Aid advocates expressed some reservations over a lack of a timetable included in the pledge, with rock star and anti-poverty campaigner Bono warning the G8's declaration was rife with "the language of obfuscation."

NBA Cares, HBO, Global Business Coalition and the Kaiser Foundation team up
Jamie Foxx and Queen Latifah are two famous faces who have joined together with NBA Cares to promote HIV testing in the U.S. and abroad in new, groundbreaking television and radio public service ads. The unique campaign has been developed by the National Basketball Association (NBA), HBO, the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC), and the Kaiser Family Foundation. Clinton Foundation Will Receive $200-Million
Two international donors have pledged at least $100-million each to support sustainable-development efforts by Bill Clinton’s nonprofit organization.
Carlos Slim Helu — a Mexican investor and the world’s second-richest man, with $49-billion — pledged $100-million to the Clinton Giustra Sustainable Growth Initiative, which will work with private companies to deal with social, economic, and environmental issues as they relate to sustainable growth. Last year he poured $1.8-billion into one of his foundations, and announced he will donate as much as $10-billion over the next four years to support health and education programs. Canadian entertainment and mining magnate Frank Giustra also pledged at least $100-million and half of his future natural-resources earnings.

The Fund for Global Human Rights seeks to increase the flow of financial resources to on-the-ground human rights organizations and to strengthen human rights movements and communities in countries around the world. 
Currently the Fund makes grants to human rights organizations based in 13 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  The Fund aims to provide funding for human rights organizations over the longer term.  To that end, they maintain a long-term focus on specific countries and regions where they believe strategic grant-making can make a difference in advancing human rights protections over time. Elsevier Foundation Calls For Grant Proposals
Supporting libraries in the developing world
The Elsevier Foundation has announced a call for grant proposals under its “Innovative Libraries in Developing Countries” program.  The Foundation will provide grants to libraries in the developing countries and their supporting organizations for programs to enhance libraries’ capacity in the fields of science, technology and medicine -- through library training and education; library infrastructure, technology or information services; and digitization and preservation of information.  The Foundation especially encourages proposals that support partnerships between libraries in the developing countries and institutions in the developed countries.  Proposals must be submitted by Oct 1, 2007, and will be awarded at the end of the 2007 calendar year.

Grammy Foundation Announces Grant Guidelines for Scientific Research and Archiving and Preservation Projects

The Grammy Foundation, a philanthropic organization of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences
that works to cultivate the awareness, appreciation, and advancement of the contribution of recorded music on American culture, has announced funding areas and guidelines for its 2007/2008 grant cycle.

Hewlett Foundation Awards $100.3 Million in New Grants

A total of 144 organizations recently were awarded $100.3 million in grants from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Organizations receiving grants ranged throughout the world in the Foundation’s six primary areas of interest: education, population, global development, the environment, performing arts and philanthropy.
Among the highlights of the grants are:

Education – Providing Free Educational Materials to the World
The Education Program made $23,582,500 in grants to thirty-one organizations. These grants included a $4.45 million to Open University in the United Kingdom to continue to build content and develop tools for its Learning Space and LabSpace sites. The new grant will significantly increase Open University’s interactive content and hours of course offerings.
Population – Studying the Importance of Good Reproductive Health
The Population Program, which funds work on reproductive health regionally and worldwide, made $19,395,000 in grants to thirty-two diverse organizations. Among them is a grant of $1.3 million to the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research in The Hague, which will, in turn, fund scientific research on how population and reproductive health affect economic development in Africa.
Global Development – Supporting Foreign Policy Research in the U.S.
The Global Development Program made $13,456,284 in grants to twenty-six organizations.  As part of its partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the quality of education in the developing world, the Program also made a $9 million grant to the Pratham Mumbai Education Initiative for “Read India,” a nationwide program to spread literacy and other learning skills in that country.
Environment – Restoring Rivers, Reducing Carbon Emissions
The Foundation’s Environment Program made $23,224,000 in grants to twenty-eight organizations, including a $3,400,000 to the International Council on Clean Transportation.

Howard G. Buffett Foundation Awards $2.5 Million for African Media Initiative
The International Women's Media Foundation has announced a four-year, $2.5 million grant from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation to increase and enhance reporting on agriculture and rural development in Africa, incorporate women's roles in the coverage of agriculture and rural economics, and create more gender equality in newsrooms.
The project will include an assessment of current news media coverage of agriculture, rural development, and gender-related issues. IWMF intends to expand on a recently completed pilot project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that significantly enhanced the coverage of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Africa.

Adelson Family Charitable Foundation:

-For efforts to encourage young Bedouin volunteers to lead informal education activites in towns and villages in the Negev region of Israel: $400,000 over two years to the Negev Institute for Strategies of Peace and Development.
-For the Protection of Israel's Mediterranean Coastline from Land-Based Polluntion Project: $900,000 to Zalul (Ranmat Gan, Israel)

Grants awarded to document all known species of animals
MacArthur Foundation and Sloan Foundation have awarded $20 million and $2.5 million, respectively, to the Encyclopedia of Life, to establish a global effort to document all known species of animals, plants, and other living organisms.

Rockefeller awards over 1 million dollars in international grants
-To enable Asian researchers to participate in a global workshop concerning Asia's impact on sub-Saharan Africa: $40,000 to African Economic Research Consortium (Nairobi, Kenya)
-To help scientists in Africa develop a cowpea breed that is pest-resistant and test its suitability to African environments: $485,640 over three years to Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (Canberra, Australia)
-To help produce "Access to Life", a documentary-photography project that seeks to promote antiretrovial therapy for HIV/AIDS patients: $200,000 to Global Fund to Fights AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Switzerland)
-For its efforts to provide a better understanding of and solutions for global-health and social issues: $454,844 to Indepth Network (Accra, Ghana)

AIDS Funding Still Falls Short of Need, Report Finds
Despite significant increases in funding for AIDS, data from 2006 show that resources to combat the global pandemic still fall short of need, a new report from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation finds.
Released in conjunction with the recent G8 Summit, the report, Financing the Response to AIDS in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: International Assistance From the G8, European Commission, and Other Donor Governments, 2006 (24 pages, PDF), provides an analysis of funding for AIDS provided by the so-called Group of Eight and other donor governments, which collectively provide the bulk of international assistance for AIDS through bilateral programs and contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
