Implementing innovative programs aimed at increasing breast cancer awareness, education, screening, and quality access to care
Category: Health | Medical Research | Social & Human Services
Available from: Susan G Komen Foundation
Deadlines: N/A
Although breast cancer is a global disease, beliefs and approaches to its diagnosis and treatment vary greatly, in part due to differences in cultural norms, health care systems, and economic conditions. In this context, no single approach to breast cancer will prove effective around the world. For these reasons, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is partnering with local non-profit organizations in communities worldwide to implement innovative programs aimed at increasing awareness, education, screening, and quality access to care. Through local grants they strengthen organizations and networks and replicate successful programs that can be implemented on a larger scale. To date, Komen for the Cure has awarded more than $8 million for international community health programs. At this time, Komen is not accepting unsolicited proposals. Komen is focusing funding efforts on current commitments and will be accepting proposals by invitation only. They encourage you to check the website periodically for updates on future funding opportunities. For further information you can contact the foundation on international@komen.org

Available from: Open Society Institute Global Drug Policy Program
Deadline: 1st October 2010
The Open Society Institute Global Drug Policy Program aims to broaden, diversify and consolidate the network of organizations actively challenging the current state of international drug policy. The program is dedicated to utilizing scientific evidence and input from organizations and
individuals engaged in and affected by drug use and drug policy in the development of policy recommendations. The Global Drug Policy Program welcomes proposals from organizations worldwide. We support a broad range of institutions
working in different fields, such as economics, policy, public health, human rights, and the media. While the program does not have upper or lower funding brackets, projects are expected to demonstrate co-funding. The Global Drug Policy program
funds projects which do not exceed one year. In 2010, the program will accept applications on a rolling basis from March 1 until October 1.

Ibrahim Foundation Decides NOT to Award $5 Million Prize
For the second year in a row, the London-based Mo Ibrahim Foundationhas announced that it will not award its $5 million annual prize for excellence in African leadership.
Created in 2007 by Sudan-born billionaire Mo Ibrahim, the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership honors a former African head of state who has demonstrated leadership that improves the prospects of people on the continent. Recipients of the prize, who receive $5 million over ten years and $200,000 annually for life thereafter, must be democratically elected and have left office within the past three years. The first two recipients of the prize were Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique and Festus Gontebanye Mogae of Botswana. In addition, South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela was named an honorary laureate in 2007.
According to the Associated Press, the seven-member prize committee considered "some credible candidates" — including former presidents Thabo Mbeki of South Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, and John Kufuor of Ghana — in 2009 but eventually decided not to award the prize. This year, the committee told the foundation's board that there have been "no new candidates or new developments and therefore no selection of a winner had been made." The foundation will continue to promote complementary initiatives, including the Ibrahim Leadership Fellowships, a new initiative designed to identify and prepare the next generation of African leaders.
As measured by the foundation's Ibrahim Index, which uses eighty criteria to assess the performance of African countries, the overall standard of governance on the continent is improving. "Many African countries are making great strides not just economically, but also in terms of their governance," said Mo Ibrahim. "Nevertheless, the foundation is anything but complacent....[Our] mission is to improve governance and nurture leadership in Africa. [And it] is clear that much more needs to be done."

Report: Global Fund suspends aid for Zambia over corruption
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has suspended more than $300 million in aid to Zambia, citing concerns that Zambian officials have not done enough to root out corrupt officials within the health ministry. Sweden and the Netherlands have suspended aid to Zambia, and the European Union has canceled funds for Zambian roads. Health Minister Kapembwa Simbao said that the government has made the necessary structural reforms to prevent corruption, but the Global Fund has demanded action on specific individuals before aid can proceed.

Report: European Foundation Leaders call for Statute to aid cross-border giving
Key European foundation leaders have called for new regulation in Europe to enable them to work across borders in order to maximise their impact in today’s challenging financial climate.
“A statute enabling foundations in Europe to work in neighbouring countries is long overdue – not having this mechanism in place is stopping foundations realising their potential - and in these difficult financial times foundations have an increasingly important role to play,” said Gerry Salole chief executive of the European Foundation Centre, which represents foundations from all across Europe.
Under current regulation, a foundation in one of the 27 member states will find it hard to set up a programme in another European country, even if it has the funds to do so. This means that vital work is not being carried out where it could make impact to ordinary lives in Europe.
“This is not in line with the European vision that we all support so fervently,” said Salole. “Foundations have the potential to play a key role in supporting the EU’s 2020 agenda, but at the moment they are lacking the tools to do it.”
A recent study by the EU estimated that there are some 110,000 foundations in Europe, collectively spending between 83 and 150 billion euros annually on projects and programmes, and providing employment for to up to 1 million Europeans.
A recent Gallup poll shows that 70% of interviewed MEPs think that foundations have a vital role to play in supporting the development of the EU Europe 2020 initiative. 86% of respondents think the EU should play a role in facilitating the work of foundations via a European Foundation Statute.
“With a European Foundation Statute in place, foundations can make a real contribution to a strong Europe – many have already endured for hundreds of years – surviving war and political turmoil,” noted Salole. “They have shown themselves to be resilient during the global economic downturn, demonstrating responsible leadership and creativity. Let’s use this exceptional capacity to make a positive impact and a stronger Europe.”
The call for a European Foundation Statute was made at Foundation Week that took place in Brussels to showcase the work of European foundations and to map out the future roles foundations can play to improve the lives of European citizens.

Report: Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network to Dissolve
The
Angel Network, the charity founded by media mogul Oprah Winfrey, has announced that it will cease operations as soon as its remaining funds are dispersed.
Launched in 1998 with initial donations from viewers of Winfrey's populartalk show, the charity raised more than $80 million from 150,000 donors, the Associated Press reports. Its best-known projects include supporting rebuilding efforts in Gulf Coast communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina and building fifty-five rural schools in a dozen countries. All the network's final grantees have been chosen, and the charity is no longer accepting grant requests or donations.
The decision to dissolve the network comes as Winfrey prepares to wrap up production of her talk show next fall after twenty-five years on the air, according to Angel Network spokeswoman Angela DePaul. Winfrey remains committed to philanthropy, and her new Oprah Winfrey Network will highlight charitable organizations.

Report: Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett Ask Nation's Super-Rich to Give Half Their Wealth to Charity
In what some are calling the biggest fundraising pitch in history, Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett have launched a campaign to encourage the nation's billionaires to give at least half of their fortunes to charity,
Fortune reports.
The genesis of the campaign can be traced to a May 2009 meeting convened by Bill Gates that brought together some of the nation's — and the world's — wealthiest philanthropists, including David Rockefeller, who hosted the event in New York City; Michael Bloomberg; Peter G. Peterson; George Soros; Chuck Feeney; Oprah Winfrey; Ted Turner; and Eli and Edythe Broad. At the meeting, the group, which at the time had a combined net worth of $130 billion and a collective history of generous giving to charity, discussed their ideas about philanthropy, including how to encourage wealthy Americans to give more. Over the next year, several additional meetings were held, and the campaign quietly began to take shape. Starting with the Forbes list of the four hundred wealthiest Americans, the campaign will encourage the nation's super-rich to pledge at least 50 percent of their net worth to charitable causes, either during their lifetimes or at death.
With a combined net worth in 2009 of roughly $1.2 trillion, the Forbes 400 could give an additional $600 billion or more to charity if they rose to the challenge — and that's not counting billionaires who may have been left off the list. To put that in perspective, total charitable giving in the United States, which surpasses all other countries in philanthropic generosity, has topped $300 billion in each of the last three years. According to IRS records and estimates by Fortune, the wealthiest Americans gave between 8 percent and 11 percent of their total adjusted income to charity in 2007, while among individuals paying estate taxes charitable bequest gifts accounted for 12 percent of the $229 billion in gross estates.
Although the definition of success in the campaign may take years to determine, in the short-term the Gateses and Buffett simply want to encourage the nation's wealthiest individuals to think more seriously about giving. Indeed, said Buffett, anyone who is rich has thought about what to do with his or her money. "They may not have reached a decision about that, but they have for sure thought about it," Buffet told Fortune. "The pledge that we're asking them to make will put them to thinking about the whole issue again....If they wait until they're making a final will in their nineties, the chance of their brainpower and willpower being better than they are today is nil."

Report: Only a quarter of London Marathon income goes to charity, documentary claims
London Marathon Trading attacks 'stunning ignorance' of Channel 4's Dispatches, which says remainder goes on salaries and 'undisclosed costs'
The Channel 4 (UK) programme Dispatches has claimed that the organisers of the London Marathon gave only a quarter of the money raised by the event to its parent charity last year.
London Marathon Limited, the trading subsidiary of the London Marathon Charitable Trust Limited, gave £4.5m of the £17.8m raised in 2009 to the trust.
Tracing the Marathon's Millions, first broadcast at 8pm on 9th April 2010, will claim that the remainder is "eaten up in salaries and undisclosed costs".
It also claimed that one member of staff, which London Marathon Limited refuses to identify, was paid between £240,000 and £250,000 last year.
Nick Bitel, chief executive of London Marathon Limited, said the documentary displayed "stunning ignorance" of charity trading and that the marathon generated more money for charity than any other running event in Europe. The marathon's costs include toilets, barriers, venue hire, staff and rent. He said its costs compared favourably with other, similar events.
"This is an attack on charity trading companies," said Bitel.
He would not reveal the identity of the highest-earning employee, but said the person's salary last year included a one-off bonus for saving the marathon £3m by finding a new sponsor without using a sponsorship agency. David Bedford, race director of the marathon, said the programme displayed "a toxic mixture of opinions and half-truths masquerading as facts". A statement by London Marathon Limited said it planned to refer the production company, Blakeway, and Channel 4 to communications regulator Ofcom. This year's London Marathon is on 25 April.

— a five-year initiative jointly funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — will enable scientists to employ novel, creative approaches and technologies to address common constraints facing small-holder farmers, including stresses such as drought and diseases. Awarded to forty-two institutions in seventeen states, the grants include international collaborators in Kenya, South Africa, Malawi, Australia, Colombia, Mexico, Switzerland, Denmark, Pakistan, India, Papua New Guinea, and the United Kingdom. Scientists from the Centers of the Consultative Group for International Agriculture and the private sector will also participate in some of the projects.

Website: Virgin Money Giving nets half as many pages as rival JustGiving
More than 9,000 London Marathon runners raised money through new site
More than 11,000 people set up fundraising pages for this year's London Marathon on the new Virgin Money Giving website.
A Virgin spokesman said 9,279 of the new pages were used for donations and the rest were inactive. Between £5m and £7m had been raised on the site so far, he said, and a total would be provided in the next few weeks.
A spokeswoman for Virgin Money Giving's main rival, the long-established JustGiving, said it had 20,872 London Marathon pages this year, 847 fewer than last year; 15,011 of these pages were active. More than £19.5m had been donated on the site to support London Marathon runners so far this year, she said; the average per page was up 4.5 per cent on last year's figure, at £1,308.
The Virgin site was launched in October last year after it was announced that Virgin would take over sponsorship of the marathon from Flora. The London Marathon website describes Virgin Money Giving as "the official fundraising website for the Virgin London Marathon".
The Virgin spokesman said marketing for the marathon and the website had been "entwined". He said there were 1,500 more runners in this year's marathon than in last year's, which partly explained the increase in the overall number of people setting up fundraising pages online.
The increase might also have been caused by a shift away from smaller fundraising sites, or by people choosing to raise money online for the first time, he said.
The spokeswoman for JustGiving said she expected this year's fundraising total on the site to be close to last year's figure of £25m. She said integrating JustGiving with social networking site Facebook had encouraged runners to use the site.

Online Petition: The Iraq's Missing Campaign

The Iraq’s Missing Campaign seeks both to support relatives of missing persons in Iraq and help them find answers as to the fate of loved ones.
In Iraq, there are an estimated 1 million people missing and presumed dead who have not been identified. So far over 200,000 bodies have been excavated from over 300 mass graves.
Yet, despite the growing importance of human rights and international law in world affairs, it appears that the international community remains complacent toward crimes of the scale inflicted on Iraqis. Could this be the single greatest obstruction to securing peace and reconciliation in Iraq?
Alleviating the pain that relatives suffer in the search for their lost loved ones is important to allow peace to be given a chance and to secure a more peaceful future for Iraqis. We urge anyone who can spare just a minute of their time to sign our petition, which calls on members of the international community to recognise the extent of the crimes and prosecute those responsible as a matter of urgency.
Please read and sign our online petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/im123456/. For more information and how to take further action please visit our website at www.iraqsmissing.org, email: iraqsmissing@gmail.com or call us on (0113) 2438880.
