Supporting some of the most disadvantaged and poorest people in the world

AfricaCategory:
Children | Community | Disability | Education | Environment | Health | Human Services
Available from: Comic Relief
Deadline:
Rolling

Comic Relief supports some of the most disadvantaged and poorest people in the world. Africa is the focus for most of our international work as the continent has the highest levels of poverty and injustice in the world. At the same time we support work in a limited number of countries in Asia and Latin America. Comic Relief grants to UK-registered charities only (including charities registered in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) whose main aim is development and who work closely with identified local organisations. They believe lasting change requires investing in work that addresses people’s immediate needs as well as tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. To do this effectively they’ve developed a set of principles which guide the way they work and the expectations they have of the organisations they fund. Organisations applying will need to demonstrate how their work addresses the following: understanding the context; consulting with key players; building on good practice; involving local people; investing in local organizations; working with others; implementing learning strategies and applying learning.

GAVI Announces $4.3 Billion in Commitments to Vaccine Program

WorldwideCategory: Health | International Development
Grant Amount:
$4,300,000,000
Grant made to:
GAVI
Grant made from:
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization (GAVI) has announced commitments totaling $4.3 billion from private donors and donor countries — including $1 billion over five years from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — to immunize more than 250 million of the world's poorest children against life-threatening diseases.

Announced at GAVI's first pledging conference, the commitments exceeded the Geneva-based organization's $3.7 billion goal and will enable it to reach more children faster than planned and accelerate the introduction of new vaccines. Although a portion of the pledges must be matched with support from new donors, the increase will allow GAVI to fully fund approved applications; a record fifty countries applied in the organization's latest funding round.

As a result of the conference, funding from donor country governments more than doubled, with some countries, including Japan and Brazil, pledging to support GAVI's vaccine program for the first time. Developing countries also committed to maintain or increase co-financing of their programs, while vaccine manufactures said they would lower prices on a range of drugs purchased by the alliance.

Hosted by the governments of the United Kingdom and Liberia as well as the Gates Foundation, the conference was preceded by publication of a series of studies which found that if 90 percent of the children in the more than seventy developing countries were fully immunized, about 6.4 million lives and more than $151 billion in treatment costs could be saved over ten years, producing economic benefits of $231 billion. To that end, conference attendees — including international government officials and global public health leaders from the public and private sectors — plan to meet again in two years to review GAVI's progress.

$1.5 million to Fight Cancer in Africa

AfricaCategory: Children & Youth | Internatonal Development
Grant Amount:
$1,500,000
Grant made to:
Partners in Health
Grant made from:
Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation

Partners in Health has announced a three-year, $1.5 million commitment from the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation to help fight childhood cancer in Rwanda.

The grant will support efforts by Boston-based PIH and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to develop a comprehensive cancer program in the African nation and improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and follow-up care for children. In 2002, the World Health Organization put the number of new cases of cancer diagnosed annually on the continent at 650,000 and predicted more than a million new cancer cases in sub-Saharan Africa by 2020.

There are no practicing oncologists in Rwanda, and financial, geographic, and logistical barriers limit the accessibility of the few cancer care services that do exist. Despite the lack of oncological treatment infrastructure within the country, PIH and a local partner organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima, have been providing pediatric cancer care in rural Rwanda since 2007.

Save the Children Receives $1.5 Million From Oprah Winfrey Foundation to Educate Zimbabwean Children

ZimbabweCategory: Education | Children & Youth
Grant Amount:
$1,500,000
Grant made to:
Save the Children
Grant made from:
Oprah Winfrey Foundation

Save the Children has announced a $1.5 million grant from the Oprah Winfrey Foundation to rebuild the Matau Primary School in Zimbabwe.

Announced on one of the final episodes of the Oprah Winfrey Show, the grant was awarded in honor of Winfrey's "favorite" guest, Tererai Trent, a woman from the village of Zvipani whose lifelong dream was to gain an education. Trent first appeared on Winfrey's show in 2009 and explained that she had received support from the people in her village to relocate to the United States in 1998, where she eventually earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural education and later a master's and doctorate degree. During her second appearance, Trent told Winfrey that she felt she had to give back to the village by improving educational opportunities for children.

The grant will be used to begin construction on new classrooms, latrines, a playground for preschoolers, a school administration building, and teachers' houses. Save the Children also will supply locally made desks, chairs, books, toys, and other learning materials for students and preschoolers. Through the project, Save the Children will work to improve learning for nearly four thousand children at Matau Primary School and in neighboring communities. In addition, the humanitarian organization will spend three years training teachers, carrying out a community-wide literacy program, and helping instructors plan and prepare activities for preschoolers to help them succeed.

$3.8 million initiative to help eradicate child malnutrition in Indonesia and Bangladesh

AsiaCategory: Children | Food
Grant Amount:
$3,800,000
Grant made to:
TBC
Grant made from:
Kraft Foods

Kraft Foods, the U.S.-based food and beverage giant, has announced a $3.8 million initiative to help eradicate child malnutrition in Indonesia and Bangladesh.

Announced at a World Economic Forum meeting in Jakarta, the program will fund 180 farming "centers of excellence" over the next four years in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) region of Indonesia and the Satkhira district of Bangladesh. In partnership with Helen Keller International, the program will work to teach thousands of women across NTT and Satkhira sustainable farming practices and provide "start-your-own-farm" supplies, including fertilizers and other tools; nutrition education; and small business training. The hope is that participants in the program eventually will create thousands of homestead farms, enabling them to grow what they need to feed their families a nutritionally balanced diet.

The program represents the company's first major investment as part of Project Laser Beam, a five-year, $50 million public-private partnership led by the UN World Food Programme. Over the past twenty-five years, Kraft Foods and its foundation have donated more than $1 billion in cash and food to hunger-relief organizations.

"We can end child malnutrition," said Kraft Foods chairman and CEO Irene Rosenfeld. "For our part, we're employing innovative solutions and investments in sustainable farming, microenterprises, and nutrition education to improve food security and provide economic opportunity for Indonesian and Bangladeshi families in need. By working together under Project Laser Beam, we help ensure that these efforts are sustainable and scalable."

Social media tools for grantseeking research

This month Howard Lake, publisher of UK Fundraising, talks about social media channels.

Howard Lake is publisher of UK Fundraising (www.fundraising.co.uk), the online resource and community for professional fundraisers which he created in 1994. He advises and trains charities and fundraising sector businesses on many aspectsof using digital tools, from web and email through to social media (http://ukfundraising.eventbrite.com/).
He is consistently voted in the 50 most influential in fundraising by readers of Fundraising magazine, and has been a judge for the UK's National Fundraising Awards for five years. He is advising several digital fundraising companies and startups.

Social media channels and tools like Facebook and Twitter offer a surprising number of opportunities to support charities' grantseeking research. Not surprisingly, many grantmakers use these tools themselves both to share information & announcements and to keep up to date with developments and professional contacts themselves.

Here are four tools that I use on a regular basis for various elements of fundraising research, including grants and funding research, and which you might find useful.

1. Twilert (www.twilert.com)

If you use Google Alerts (www.google.com/alerts) you will be familiar with this kind of free current awareness service via email. Twilert lets you set up one or more searches for words or phrases that appear on Twitter: you then choose how often you wish to receive these email alerts (daily or weekly). Then sit back and wait for the alerts to arrive.
They appear aggregated in one message, presented in an easy-to-scan fashion.

They include links to the original tweet and the original author, together with any web links included in the tweet.

Twilert, and tools like it, help you scan Twitter for the issues that matter to you, and they save you from conducting regular manual searches of Twitter.

Billionaires Ted Turner And Richard Branson Share Lessons In Philanthropy

Virgin billionaire Sir Richard Branson and fellow mogul Ted Turner took the stage at Wall Street’s Cipriani to tell a crowd of entrepreneurs about their latest initiatives in global health.

Among other things, Branson established a health clinic in South Africa and has become an advocate for the war on drugs; meanwhile, Turner pledged $1 billion to help establish the United Nations Foundation (he’s already given $841 million) and has been an advocate for women’s health and fighting against female genital mutilation.

Despite the tough topics there were some light moments. Turner said it was easy for him to sign on to Bill Gates‘ and Warren Buffett‘s Giving Pledge to give away half his net worth (“I’d already pretty well done it”). He tried to convince Branson to sign on, too.

AIDS at 30: Nations at the crossroads

This report provides evidence of how much we have achieved and weighs that against our vision for the future: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS related deaths. In these pages you will find scientific analysis, personal insights and the results of extensive national and regional consultations at the front lines of the AIDS response. While perspectives differ, one simple truth emerges: we cannot break the arc of this epidemic – where five people were newly infected for every three starting treatment in 2010 – if we adopt a 'business as usual' approach.

It's popular, celebrities promote it, but what do sponsored children feel about being sponsored?

Sponsoring a child in the developing world is a popular form of charitable giving. But what do the children themselves make of the system?

When Priscilla was a child, a donor many thousands of miles from her Ghanaian village helped pay for her schooling.

For years she exchanged letters with her British benefactor. Now she is 20, the charity has stopped the sponsorship and the relationship.

“Last year I wrote to them saying goodbye and thanked them for taking care of me up to this day,” says Priscilla, an accountancy student. “When I was writing, I was full of tears. Tears were coming from my eyes.”

Sponsor-a-child arrangements throw up emotional highs and lows for the children, something many donors are unaware of.

Charities like World Vision and Plan International use sponsor-a-child models to raise funds Priscilla’s sponsorship was arranged through World Vision. The charity has boosted the fortunes of Dangme West, which used to be one of the most deprived areas in greater Accra, the capital of Ghana.

The seven deadly sins of fundraising appeals – and how to avoid them

These points and tips are mainly written in the context of individual giving, although many are also just as relevant to events, community and legacy fundraising, membership marketing, volunteer recruitment or anywhere direct marketing techniques are used.  They represent the most common issues in fundraising appeals that I have come across and include suggestions to help you avoid the same pitfalls.

I hope that some of these insights and suggestions are useful to you and that you will test to prove or disprove them for yourself!

1. Beating around the bush
Many people seem to feel slightly embarrassed about asking for donations.  I only say this because there have been numerous occasions where I’ve been asked to remove most of the asks for a donation from appeal copy; once to the point that the first mention was almost at the bottom of the last page of the letter, almost as though it was an afterthought.

This is a fundraising appeal, not a magazine article or a short story, so get to the point and do it quickly.  You’ve heard of the saying, ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’, and never has this been more true than in this context.  Experience and testing tells me that the earlier you include an ask, and the more direct you are about it, the better the response will be.

Tips to uplift response & income:

  • -Include your ask early – the earlier the better

  • -Repeat the ask several times throughout your copy

  • -Be direct – phrases like, ‘will you donate today?’, will be more effective than, ‘your support would be appreciated’

IBM v Carnegie Corporation

Both IBM and the Carnegie Corporation will turn 100 this month. Has the multinational business or universal philanthropy done more for society?

“ONE simple way to assess the impact of any organisation is to answer the question: how is the world different because it existed?” That is the test set out by Sam Palmisano in the foreword to a new book celebrating the 100th birthday of IBM, the firm he has run since 2002. But another organisation is also turning 100 this month—the Carnegie Corporation of New York, a flagship of American philanthropy. Mr Palmisano’s insight is too good to limit to only one of the centenarians. A better question is: which has done more for the world, one of its leading companies or one of its most influential charities?

At first glance, IBM and the Carnegie Corporation seem to be engaged in such different endeavours that comparing them might seem about as sensible as comparing apple orchards and orange groves. Making money has always been the main aim of the company formed in 1911 by the merger of three small producers of mechanical accounting machines, scales and time recorders, and renamed International Business Machines 13 years later. By contrast, the Carnegie Corporation explicitly set out to create a better world by giving away what remained of the great fortune of its industrialist founder, Andrew Carnegie. Yet both can assert that they have made the world a better place during the past century, and it is far from obvious which claim is stronger.

Fundraising for Social Good

As the nonprofit cheerleader and advocate that I am, one of my favorite twitter feeds and blogs is @Nonprofitorgs (http://nonprofitorgs.wordpress.com). One of the most critical responsibilities tasked to nonprofits is raising sufficient funds for the organization. Thanks to social media, nontraditional approaches are allowing nonprofits to reach wider audiences, gain more awareness and visibility and therefore increase overall funds raised. The blog Nonprofit Tech 2.0 posted a great article on 6 online fundraising tools that many may have never heard of:

1. Swipegood: This resource enables donors to round up all of their debit and credit card purchases to the nearest dollar and allows them to donate the difference to the charity of their choice. It's an easy and effective way for people all around the world to put good use to their spare change.

2. Philanthroper: Just like Living Social or Groupon, Philanthroper is a daily deal site, although instead of selling you pizza for half price, the website shares a different nonprofit's mission and story daily. If you like what you read, you have the choice to donate $1 to the organization.

Guess2Give adds sweepstake to online events fundraising

Guess2Give adds a new twist to online events fundraising by offering a sweepstake function to individuals' sponsored events, giving people an opportunity to chip in,
make a donation and stand a chance of winning a cash prize.

Mark Chandler, co-founder of Guess2Give, said: "Anything that can be measured can become a fundraising event using Guess2Give. Whether it’s about guessing the length of a best-man’s speech, the weight of all the fish on a fishing weekend, how far a paper plane will fly or even the number of worms found in a square metre of earth. The possibilities are endless and we’re looking forward to seeing how inventive everyone can be”.

It costs £3 to make a guess and participants are kept in touch via social networks and email. A fixed 50p from each guess goes into a prize fund and up to £2.51 (including Gift Aid) goes to the charity.

Parkinsons UK is the first charity to sign up and get their supporters involved. Fundraising Director, Paul Jackson-Clark said: "For me it was a simple decision to make when I was introduced to Guess2Give, as it will provide a new income stream without any cost or risk to the charity. It also brings a new, fun element for supporters to be more involved with an event”.

Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has stopped payment on hundreds
of millions of dollars of grants to China

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has stopped payment on hundreds of millions of dollars of grants to China — its fourth-largest recipient behind Ethiopia, India, and Tanzania — in a dispute over China's management of the funds, the New York Times reports.

The Global Fund, which first held back payment of a major AIDS grant to China in November, froze payment on other grants a few weeks ago after new concerns were raised over the country's management of grants from the fund. According to an audit conducted last year, the Chinese government failed to fulfill its pledge to allocate 35 percent of a $283 million AIDS grant to community-based organizations; a report from a nongovernmental group called Global Fund Watch found that China actually allocated less than 11 percent to nongovernmental groups, and that community-based groups appeared to be left out of grant discussions. While Chinese officials responded to the allegations by saying that many private groups could not be trusted to spend the money properly, Chinese activists believe the government and its NGO proxies routinely pocket a significant portion of the funds and are wary of supporting grassroots groups with the ability to organize.

The dispute has fueled a growing debate over whether China should be receiving any aid at all from the Global Fund. Since 2003, China has received $539 million from the fund and is in line to receive an additional $295 million. Critics of China who think the money would be better spent in poorer countries point to the $46 billion the Chinese government spent to stage the 2008 Olympic Games and last year's Shanghai Expo as well as the $586 billion economic stimulus package it recently financed.

What motivates billionaires like Bill Gates?

After interviewing many of the world's richest men, HARDtalk presenter Stephen Sackur ponders the qualities that those billionaires have in common.

Bill Gates may be a billionaire 50 times over, but he is struggling to raise a five-dollar smile. He arrives for our interview with all the enthusiasm of a man about to have his toenails forcibly removed.

But then the cameras roll. Gates powers up, his eyes engage. For half an hour, the founder of Microsoft radiates passionate intelligence.

We are in Geneva for the UN's World Health Assembly, at which Gates is a keynote speaker. He tells me about the progress being made to vaccinate the world's poorest children against many of the most harmful infectious diseases.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $10bn (£6.15bn) to scientific research and immunisation programmes to make this the "decade of vaccines".

For those who idly wonder about the difference between being plain rich and being vastly, unimaginably wealthy, here is an answer. Billionaires (and there are more than 1,200 of them, according to the latest Forbes Rich List ) get to think and act on a global scale.

Strategic Philanthropy: a global movement for positive social change, not just
giving to charity

We are amidst an exciting global movement whereby philanthropy is increasingly seen as a strategic tool to catalyze positive change in the world as opposed to exclusively contributing financially to non-profits. On the other hand exciting initiatives are evolving that value the world’s poor not as passive recipients of charity, but as entrepreneurial and creative human beings who can solve their own problems. This movement is about creating impact, about unleashing power to address poverty, about using resources to unlock entrepreneurial potential in emerging markets. To underpin this movement, Credit Suisse and CSR Asia have released “Strategic Philanthropy: Unlocking Entrepreneurial Potential”. This paper could not have come at a better time, with investors, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, corporations, and politicians mobilized to support entrepreneurial solutions in emerging markets.

Growth of the small and medium enterprise sector in developing countries is the most powerful engine of job creation and economic growth. Yet more than two thirds of SMEs in developing countries don’t have access to finance nor expertise to accelerate this growth. Organisations like Acumen Fund and Root Capital, featured throughout the paper, have proven that providing these business initiatives with access to capital and capacity can make a tremendous impact on poor communities. Besides job creation, innovative social business solutions have the potential to solve particular social or environmental problems in society, like including marginalized groups or bringing sustainable services and products at affordable costs.

European Union Tightens NGO Funding Rules

Non-government and civil society organisations seeking funding from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF),
will have to prove that they have been on top of their game before they receive the funding.

Without elaborating, the EDF Democratic Governance and Accountability Program (DGAP) manager, Ms Robina Namusisi,
on Wednesday told NGO representatives during an informational session in Kampala that the tougher conditions are recommendations from activities of the 9th EDF Grantees in which EDF is trying to identify the most suitable NGOs for funding.

She said under the new rules, the European Development Fund EDF will disqualify proposals seeking funding for seminars, workshops, per-diems and scholarships for capacity building, unless they are directly linked to grassroot activities for which they received funding.

Forbes Rich List 2011Online - The richest people on the planet

Slim, named the world's richest man by Forbes Magazine, said he's seeking to boost his investments in Colombia because of the country's open policy on oil exploration, its mineral assets and growing middle class.
