Buffett Asks Beneficiaries to Spend His Gifts Quickly |
In addition to giving away most of his fortune to charity, the billionaire investor Warren E. Buffett also wants it spent quickly.
Mr. Buffett, who last summer pledged more than 12 million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock to five foundations, with the lion’s share going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said today in his annual letter to his company’s stockholders that he will order any stock remaining at his death be used for ‘‘philanthropic purposes within 10 years after my estate is closed.’‘ He estimated his estate should be settled within three years of his death.

Spray To Change Attitudes Campaign |
The Body Shop and MTV have joined forces with the launch of The Body Shop and MTV Rougeberry as part of the Spray To Change Attitudes Campaign. Profits will go to MTV's Staying Alive Foundation to benefit HIV awareness programmes for young people, who number among half of all new HIV infections.
The foundation provides grants to support young people in areas where AIDS hits hardest through The Staying Alive Awards, and is committed to fighting stigma and improving education to help prevent the spread of HIV. The launch of the fragrance marks the largest multi-platform campaign and is expected to reach more than 1.3bn people globally through all MTV channels.

Nonprofit Effort Gets Low-Cost Drugs to Developing Countries |
A nonprofit group that develops treatments for diseases that many drug companies overlook has a business model that could save hundreds of thousands of lives. Victoria Hale founded OneWorld Health to investigate drugs whose patents had expired or which languished from inattention because they offered little chance of profit. OneWorld’s first target drug fought black fever in India, and the group collaborated with a small for-profit biotechnology company to develop a cheap way to mass-produce a proven malaria cure. Along the way, OneWorld Health secured a $150-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

FairTrade Food going 'mainstream' in Britain.
|
FairTrade Food in Britain is booming. "Ethical eating" is beginning to enter the mainstream now in the U.K. thanks to a mix of cultural trends, including globalization, marketing and growing awareness of issues such as pollution and labor standards. In recent months, evidence of this quiet food revolution has multiplied. Supermarkets and major retailers are rapidly expanding their fairtrade offerings such that there are now 1,500 different fairtrade goods on the market. Sales reached more than $500 million last year, up 46 percent from the previous year. Last month, one leading supermarket, Sainsbury's, said all its bananas would now be fairtrade. Tea and coffee in another leading retailer, Marks and Spencer, is now exclusively fairtrade.

| Global Fund Terminates Two Grants to Uganda |
The Global Fund has permanently terminated two grants to Uganda because of unsatisfactory performance. The grants were a Round 2 malaria grant and a Round 2 TB grant. Uganda will lose about $16 million as a result of this action. This is the second time that the Fund has taken action regarding these grants. In 2005, the Fund temporarily suspended all of Uganda's grants while problems with financial management were investigated.
Note: The fact that these grants have been terminated is not currently apparent on the Fund's website, though it is understood that this point will soon be addressed.

| Ronaldo & Zidane host the fourth "Match Against Poverty" |
World soccer greats played in a match against poverty to generate awareness of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals. The game was played on March 19 in Marseille, France, and marked the fourth "Match Against Poverty: Ronaldo and friends vs. Zidane and friends." It featured Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, both goodwill ambassadors for the U.N. Development Program. The U.N. Millennium Development Goals, adopted in 2000 by the world body, seeks to cut the rate of world poverty in half by 2015 by setting targets for rolling back hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.
All the proceeds from ticket sales will go to projects selected by UNDP in Asia, Africa and Latin America. More >>> |
| All-Star American Basketball game helps spread Nothing But Nets Campaign |
As the NBA's best players recently squared off during the All-Star Game, the United Nations Foundation used the game to spread the word about its malaria-fighting Nothing But Nets campaign.
NothingButNets.net is a Web site dedicated to raising money to buy mosquito netting to prevent the spread of malaria, which is the leading killer of children in Africa.
The NBA's support of the fight against malaria in Africa is another indication of how the league is inching closer to becoming the International Basketball Association. No other professional American league or series shows such diversity. You can get a NothingButNets.net hat today for a $10 donation. It's the best souvenir you can buy because the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches every dollar donated to the effort. Every $10 supplies one insecticide-treated bed net.

| George Soros Joins Health Groups to Battle Drug-Resistant TB, HIV |
| George Soros and the Open Society Institute have announced a $3 million grant to develop a treatment program for people with drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in poor countries — a combination that is usually lethal. OSI has joined with Partners in Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the RESULTS Educational Fund in calling on wealthy governments to do more to combat the twin epidemics. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) threatens to reverse the progress made in fighting HIV/AIDS, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, and has emerged as a top priority for world health officials. In addition to the need to strengthen and extend basic TB control, the World Health Organization is calling for $650 million in immediate emergency funding to combat XDR-TB. More >> |

| Coca-Cola restores some goodwill |
Hoping to restore some of the goodwill that made its flagship product a global icon, Coca-Cola Co. has gone on a clean-water kick in the developing world.
In Kenya, where more than half of the rural population has no access to clean water, the Atlanta beverage giant brought water-purification systems, storage urns, and hygiene lessons to 45 schools in a poor western province.
In Mali, Coke is helping extend municipal water taps beyond the country’s capital of Bamako. In India, where the company has been accused of draining water from poor communities for its own use, the company is building rainwater-harvesting structures to help alleviate chronic water shortages. Coke’s bottlers are also implementing water-efficiency measures.
Coke has some 70 clean-water projects in 40 countries and its bottlers have spent $13.4 million on water-related efforts. Another $35 million is budgeted for 2007.
While Coke has won some praise from global water experts, others complain that it could do much, much more.
