IRS Poor at Spotting Charities With Possible Terrorist Links |
The Internal Revenue Service does a poor job of identifying tax-exempt groups that may have links to terrorists, the Associated Press reports. Issued by the office of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, the report criticizes IRS investigators for relying on paper documents and a limited terrorist watch list to pinpoint possible ties between charitable and other nonprofit groups and terrorists, and warns that charities with terrorist ties could go undetected by the IRS and not be reported to the federal authorities fighting terrorism. Charity Seeks Out Women as Potential Donors |
CARE, an international aid organization, has achieved fund-raising success by reaching out to affluent women. The charity’s work to improve conditions of poor women in the world struck a chord with wealthy women age 35 and older, the charity found. It started an advertising campaign called, “I Am Powerful,” about women receiving help from CARE’s programs, and received $10-million in new revenue.
The effort has garnered support from high-profile women such as Sheila C. Johnson, a founder of Black Entertainment Television, who has hosted events to raise money for the charity, as well as from women in not-so-high-profile positions.

| Relief Group Weighs In on World Bank Search |
Oxfam, an international-development organization has called for an end to U.S. control over the appointment of the president of the World Bank, following Paul Wolfowitz’s announcement that he will resign from the international finance agency.
Mr. Wolfowitz’s departure is a rare opportunity to make changes at the World Bank, officials at Oxfam said, adding that they want Mr. Wolfowitz’s successor appointed on merit, rather than hand-picked by President Bush.
Despite the development group’s demands, the U.S. government is showing little desire to change its position on appointing an American to lead the bank.

AWARDS & FELLOWSHIPS
| $1-Million Prize Offered for Cancer Research |
Aiming to foster collaboration between researchers and encourage innovative approaches, a new prize will award $1-million for the best idea in cancer research.
Gary Curhan, from the Harvard Medical School, and Joel Greenblatt and Robert Goldstein, hedge-fund managers at Gotham Capital, worked together to set up the Gotham Prize for Cancer Research.
“Most of the work is incremental just because of the long tradition and because people tend not to pick risks. And you tend to write grants to what you think will get funded as opposed to your most innovative idea,” Dr. Curhan said. “If you want to study something that may be relatively rare, it is not going to be given the same priority as something that is more common such as breast cancer or prostate cancer.” Entrants will post summaries of their ideas on the prize’s Web site. At the end of the year, judges will decide on the best idea

| tS.com - Express yourself! |
Are you organising an event? Would you like to reach a bigger audience, save time on administration and do away with the expense of pre-printed tickets?
As from today, clubs, societies, groups and individuals can take advantage of ts Express, a quick and easy way to produce and sell tickets online. Launched by ts.com ts Express is the UK’s first free online ticketing service.
The service can be used by anyone organising an event in the UK, whether it's an open mic session in a village pub in Powys or a student club night in London, a classical music concert in York or an ice-skating competition in Inverness.
Event organisers can upload images and their desired text into the simple to use ticket set up page, and enter the details of how much they want each ticket to cost and many tickets they wish to sell. ts Express then converts this information into an A4-sized ticket that can be printed off by people who visit the site to buy tickets online. The new service is entirely supported by advertising on the tickets issued, so there are no charges or booking fees. More > > > |
