Humanitarian services + supporting training to grassroot organizations

WorldwideCategory:
Children & Youth | Community | Education | Health | Human Services
Available from: Family Care Foundation
Deadlines: None

The Family Care Foundation (FCF) provides humanitarian services and support and
training to grassroots organizations in developing countries. FCF provides funding for its pre-selected FCF Projects. Due to limited resources, coupled with unlimited potential requests, FCF does not accept unsolicited proposals or grant applications. To qualify as a FCF Project Partner, as part of their MSHSP relief and development network, applicants must first present their projects via a standardized application that is evaluated by foundation staff. If determined that the applicant project fits within the exempt purposes of FCF, field representatives become part of the further evaluation process. They rely upon an international network of advisors to personally seek out and evaluate remarkable grassroots organizations that come to their attention. Their model is based upon personal relationship and trust to assure that all selected projects meet high standards of accountability. If approved, applicants become a Project Partner of FCF and are eligible to receive funding from FCF for their projects. FCF does not otherwise accept unsolicited proposals or grant applications.

European Union - Non-State Actors and Local Authorities Program

EuropeCategory:
Community | Education | NGO Capacity Building | Human Services
Available from: European Commission
Deadline: None

Under this thematic programme, the European Commission is supporting the right of initiative of non-state actors and local authorities by funding their initiatives when geographical programmes are not the appropriate instrument and by supplementing the support that other sectoral thematic programmes can provide. The three main areas of intervention are: actions in developing countries and regions, awareness raising and education in Europe on the subject of development, and measures facilitating the coordination between civil society networks and local authorities. This programme primarily targets interventions in the field. It is chiefly implemented in countries and regions where geographical programmes do not provide for any financial support for non-state actors or local authorities owing to weak political commitment, in subregions out of reach of the
country programme or in situations of difficult partnerships, fragile States, post-conflict, political instability, etc. All non-profit state actors from the EU and from partner countries can be eligible for funding under this programme.

Helping small charities, working mostly in Africa

AfricaCategory:
Children | Disability | Education | Health | Human Services
Available from:
Kitchen Table Charitable Trust
Deadline:
None stated

The Kitchen Table Charities Trust was created to help small charities, working mostly in Africa, which are using small amounts of money to transform peoples lives. Two essential conditions attached to KTCT support are: no part of any grant should be spent in Britain on administration - including salaries and advertising campaigns; and projects must give direct help to the very poorest (usually children or widows) at the bottom of the ladder. Grants are made to UK registered charities and to locally registered charities in country of operation. Eligible organizations should also publish annual audited or independently examined accounts and should publish a periodic newsletter or annual report. Priority areas for the Trust are primary education; health, sanitation and clean drinking water; child and mother care including street children, orphanages and maternity services; and poverty alleviation, especially revenue generating projects.

FIRST EVER FOUNDATION WEEK: BRUSSELS 31 MAY-4 JUNE

The European foundation sector - which is the largest in the world, bigger than its US counterpart - is coming together for the first time ever for a full week of debates and exhibitions on the work foundations do to tackle the pressing social issues facing Europe and the world today.

Foundations impact on the lives of Europeans at every level, providing vital services and working for social change.

Hosted by the European Foundation Centre (EFC) at “SQUARE” in Brussels, Foundation Week will showcase the work done by foundations through exhibits, demos, films and cultural activities. All events in the exhibition hall are free of charge and open to the public.

A vital contribution to improving lives in Europe

“Foundations make a vital contribution to society, providing crucial support to millions of Europeans”, said Dr Gerry Salole, Chief Executive of the EFC. “The impact they have on so many areas is phenomenal and I hope that through Foundation Week we can showcase some of their work.”

It is estimated that there are some 110,000 foundations in Europe, collectively spending between 83 and 150 billion euros annually on projects and programmes, and providing employment for to up to 1 million Europeans.

“The European Foundation sector outweighs its American counterpart both in terms of assets and expenditure,” said Salole. “More importantly, these organisations have shown themselves to be resilient during the global economic downturn, showing responsible leadership and creativity.”

Report: Giving in Asia Up Despite Global Financial Crisis

Although Asian elites do not have well-established reputation for charitable giving, new data reveals that that may be changing, the Financial Times reports.

This week, India became the first of the BRIC countries to receive Save the Children's "strongest member" status after the organization's Indian donor base grew from three thousand to fifty thousand donors over two years and Indian donors gave more than $11 million to the organization in 2009. India, which has the world's fastest growing economy after China, is now on par with countries such as Italy, Germany, Romania, and South Korea in terms of charitable giving.

According to New Philanthropy Capital, a London-based consulting firm, many nongovernmental organizations braced for funding declines of up to 20 percent last year. But the global economic downturn has not significantly affected their fundraising in Asia, where large NGOs are registering their highest giving levels ever. Through the Internet and telephone campaigns, World Vision, Greenpeace, and Oxfam have registered tens of thousands of new individual donors, with World Vision recording a 45 percent year-over-year increase in donations in 2009.

“As Asia Emerges, So Do Philanthropists.” Financial Times

Report: Global AIDS Funding Falls Short of Demand

Even as the number of AIDS cases around the world continues to grow, the amount of money needed to combat the pandemic is running short, the New York Times reports.

The two chief sources of AIDS funding are the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Although Congress has authorized PEPFAR to spend up to $48 billion by 2014, budget cuts have forced the program to warn grant recipients not to expect increases for at least two years. The Global Fund has also experienced a drop in donations, having received $3 billion less in 2009 than it sought for the three diseases it is mandated to fight. As a result, the fund cut grants for AIDS prevention and treatment by an average of 12 percent last year.

The outlook for other donors and programs is no brighter. Michel Sidibé, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), reported in February that in order for the global community to fight AIDS this year it would need $27 billion. To date, an estimated $14 billion has been raised. The World Bank, which has lent $1.5 billion to countries with AIDS epidemics since 1999, is closing its prevention and treatment programs and now describes its role vis-à-vis AIDS as that of "facilitator and knowledge contributor." And the world's largest private philanthropy, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has donated some $650 million to the Global Fund over the years, is now focused more on cutting-edge medical research than on treatment.

Online Petition: The Iraq's Missing Campaign

The Iraq’s Missing Campaign seeks both to support relatives of missing persons in Iraq and help them find answers as to the fate of loved ones.

In Iraq, there are an estimated 1 million people missing and presumed dead who have not been identified. So far over 200,000 bodies have been excavated from over 300 mass graves.

Yet, despite the growing importance of human rights and international law in world affairs, it appears that the international community remains complacent toward crimes of the scale inflicted on Iraqis. Could this be the single greatest obstruction to securing peace and reconciliation in Iraq?

Alleviating the pain that relatives suffer in the search for their lost loved ones is important to allow peace to be given a chance and to secure a more peaceful future for Iraqis. We urge anyone who can spare just a minute of their time to sign our petition, which calls on members of the international community to recognise the extent of the crimes and prosecute those responsible as a matter of urgency.

Please read and sign our online petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/im123456/.  For more information and how to take further action please visit our website at www.iraqsmissing.org, email: iraqsmissing@gmail.com or call us on (0113) 2438880.

Websites, Social Networking : Fundraising goes Social

CROWDRISE

Actor Ed Norton recently helped launch Crowdrise, a slick new website that gives ordinary people an easy way to crowd source fundraising. Users create personal fundraising pages and then share them on social networks to raise money. Crowdrise also provides incentives to users by awarding bonus points towards prizes. For example, participants can earn 100 points for every vote you get from the Crowdrise Community and get 10 Points for every $1 your raise for charity.

Crowdrise takes a 5% cut of all the donations and a $1 transaction fee for donations under $25 or a $2.50 transaction fee for donations $25 and over. Charities receive a check from Crowdrise (minus processing fees) every 30 days.

RT2GIVE

You know that there are approximately 50 million "tweets" sent across the twitterverse each day, according to the Case Foundation. Why shouldn't some of those tweets be used to raise money for charity? RT2Give is Twitpay's proprietary fundraising solution for nonprofit organizations. It handles secure processing of donations in one step over social networks such as Twitter. Just last month for World Malaria Day - Malaria No More, the Case Foundation, and Malaria Envoy teamed up and used RT2Give to raise money for life saving bed nets. Each $10 donation was matched by the Case Foundation up to $25,000. The tweet read:

Every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria. Nets #endmalaria. So do retweets. RT2Give $10 http://rt2give.com/t/425

During the course of the campaign on Twitter they raised $11,290. No, it's not buckets of money but it will help purchase several bed nets for those in need.

Website: WHO launches a snakebite database

In an effort to curb some 100,000 deaths caused each year by snakebites, the World Health Organization launched a website database listing approved antivenoms. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia are most vulnerable to venomous snakebites -- which affect 2.5 million people every year. Many countries in vulnerable regions lack the laboratory facilities to isolate snake venom and produce adequate quantities of antivenom. The Boston Globe/The Associated Press

Website: Virgin Money Giving nets half as many pages as rival JustGiving

More than 9,000 London Marathon runners raised money through new site

More than 11,000 people set up fundraising pages for this year's London Marathon on the new Virgin Money Giving website.

A Virgin spokesman said 9,279 of the new pages were used for donations and the rest were inactive. Between £5m and £7m had been raised on the site so far, he said, and a total would be provided in the next few weeks.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Money Giving's main rival, the long-established JustGiving, said it had 20,872 London Marathon pages this year, 847 fewer than last year; 15,011 of these pages were active. More than £19.5m had been donated on the site to support London Marathon runners so far this year, she said; the average per page was up 4.5 per cent on last year's figure, at £1,308.

The Virgin site was launched in October last year after it was announced that Virgin would take over sponsorship of the marathon from Flora. The London Marathon website describes Virgin Money Giving as "the official fundraising website for the Virgin London Marathon".

The Virgin spokesman said marketing for the marathon and the website had been "entwined". He said there were 1,500 more runners in this year's marathon than in last year's, which partly explained the increase in the overall number of people setting up fundraising pages online.

The increase might also have been caused by a shift away from smaller fundraising sites, or by people choosing to raise money online for the first time, he said.

The spokeswoman for JustGiving said she expected this year's fundraising total on the site to be close to last year's figure of £25m. She said integrating JustGiving with social networking site Facebook had encouraged runners to use the site.

Report: Only a quarter of London Marathon income goes to charity, documentary claims

London Marathon Trading attacks 'stunning ignorance' of Channel 4's Dispatches, which says remainder goes on salaries and 'undisclosed costs'
The Channel 4 (UK) programme Dispatches has claimed that the organisers of the London Marathon gave only a quarter of the money raised by the event to its parent charity last year.
London Marathon Limited, the trading subsidiary of the London Marathon Charitable Trust Limited, gave £4.5m of the £17.8m raised in 2009 to the trust.
Tracing the Marathon's Millions, first broadcast at 8pm on 9th April 2010, will claim that the remainder is "eaten up in salaries and undisclosed costs". It also claimed that one member of staff, which London Marathon Limited refuses to identify, was paid between £240,000 and £250,000 last year.
Nick Bitel, chief executive of London Marathon Limited, said the documentary displayed "stunning ignorance" of charity trading and that the marathon generated more money for charity than any other running event in Europe. The marathon's costs include toilets, barriers, venue hire, staff and rent. He said its costs compared favourably with other, similar events.
"This is an attack on charity trading companies," said Bitel. He would not reveal the identity of the highest-earning employee, but said the person's salary last year included a one-off bonus for saving the marathon £3m by finding a new sponsor without using a sponsorship agency. David Bedford, race director of the marathon, said the programme displayed "a toxic mixture of opinions and half-truths masquerading as facts". A statement by London Marathon Limited said it planned to refer the production company, Blakeway, and Channel 4 to communications regulator Ofcom. This year's London Marathon is on 25 April.
