| International Consortium Launches $400 Million Global Pollution Remediation Fund |
The Blacksmith Institute has announced the launch of the Global Pollution Remediation Fund, which will dedicate $400 million to combating toxic pollution in the developing world.
The announcement was made after a Rockefeller Foundation - sponsored conference in Bellagio, Italy, where representatives from governmental agencies of the United States, Germany, China, Russia, Mozambique, Kenya, and the Philippines, as well as the World Bank, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Green Cross Switzerland, and Blacksmith weighed in on the proposed fund. | Gates Foundation Forms AIDS-Prevention Partnership With China |
With an initial grant of $50-million, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is set to begin an unusual AIDS-prevention partnership with the Chinese government.
Despite the relatively small number of HIV-infected people in China, the programs aim to educate those at high risk of AIDS about the virus and how to avoid it, and to stress ways in which those already infected with the disease can assure they do not pass it on.
Unlike the grass-roots groups and other nonprofit organizations the Gates foundation traditionally works with to implement its programs, Beijing’s centralized control means the foundation has had to collaborate with health, security, and Communist Party agencies. The foundation had to wait four years before the Chinese government allowed it to register as a foreign foundation. The partnership will target 12 major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou and the island province of Hainan. |
| Bono's Antipoverty Groups Will Combine Efforts |
Two antipoverty organizations co-founded by the rock star Bono — the ONE Campaign and DATA (Debt AIDS Trade Africa) — will merge in the United States to form a single organization called ONE to fight poverty, especially in Africa. Outside the United States, DATA will keep its name and will focus on helping Africa reduce its debt and fight AIDS, among other things.
The ONE Campaign had previously focused on building citizen support to fight disease and extreme poverty. The new organization will be known as ONE and will work to battle poverty. Both groups will be headquartered in Washington, with offices in London, Los Angeles, Abuja, and Berlin. |
| Grameen Foundation Initiative Puts Mobile Phones in Rural African Villages |
Peter Bladin, a vice president at the Grameen Foundation who earned millions while working for Microsoft, is fighting the war on poverty in Africa using an unlikely weapon — the mobile phone.
Bladin, who founded the Grameen Technology Center oversees the center's efforts to develop mobile phones, software, and other technology that can be used to fight poverty on the continent. Using the microcredit model, local microfinance institutions lend African entrepreneurs $200 to buy a cell phone, which they then "rent" to others for pennies a call. With the resulting income, the entrepreneur eventually pays off his or her loan and begins to climb out of poverty. At the same time, the phone itself gives villagers access to vital information such as the price of corn or the approach of guerrilla fighters, without having to spend a significant portion of their day traveling to and from a landline-based phone.

| Major Donors Become Growing Force in China |
Li Ka-shing, Asia’s wealthiest man, is giving a big chunk of his fortune to charity and leading a major change in how philanthropy is conducted in China.
While the Communist party has traditionally clamped down on privately financed institutions as a threat to its own power, and family values tend to dictate that money be given away quietly or kept within the family unit, the recent efforts of Mr. Li and other Chinese philanthropists may signal that times are changing.
Last year Mr. Li announced that he would give roughly $10-billion to his Li Ka Shing Foundation, an amount that rivals many of the wealthiest American foundations.
His announcement seems to have spurred other wealthy people to undertake philanthropic endeavors as part of a growing recognition in Asia of the gap between rich and poor.
According to the Hurun Report, a publication that tracks philanthropy in China, Yang Lan, a talk-show host, donated roughly $72-million to set up a foundation aimed at cultural exchanges, environmental protection, and education, while Yu Pengnian, head of the Chinese Shenzhen Pengnian Hotels, donated close to $270-million for health-care causes. |

For example, Facebook — a popular online network — has created a section called “Causes on Facebook” that allows people to solicit and make donations to support charities or activist activities. |
