| Gates Foundation Announces $100-Million Global-Health Fund |
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is starting a $100-million fund to support nontraditional global-health programs that usually are unable to attract grant money from governments and most foundations, reports The Wall Street Journal.
The program, called the Grand Challenges Explorations program, is open to all scientists but focused especially on those in Africa and Asia because so little money is available there to support research, the foundation said.
Bill Gates said he hopes his new fund will not only support unorthodox science, but will also encourage scientists in developing countries to stay where they are most needed, rather than leaving for more developed countries. |
| Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Launches $100 Million Initiative to Strengthen African Health Systems |
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced a $100 million initiative of at least five years to address the most critical obstacles to the delivery of effective and essential health services in sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation's African Health Initiative will provide funding to African-led partnerships working on strategies to overcome problems such as fragile, fragmented national health systems and a shortage of healthcare workers. Grants will be awarded to create population health implementation and training partnerships designed to carry out strategies to reduce mortality and morbidity in African districts of at least 250,000 people, identify and address health systems' weaknesses and funding gaps, and conduct research to be shared with the larger health service community.

| U.S. Doctors for Africa Announces Ghana Mobile Clinic Project as Part of $70 Million Initiative |
U.S. Doctors for Africa has announced the formation of the Ghana Mobile Clinic Project — its first mobile clinic in Africa — as part of a proposed $70 million Mobile Clinic Initiative, a commitment it made during the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative.
As part of its commitment, USDFA intends to deploy two hundred mobile clinics in rural areas of Africa by 2015. By the end of 2007, the first mobile clinic will be deployed to Ghana.
Despite the country's stable government, the health crisis in Ghana is as severe as in other African countries, where regions of more than a hundred thousand people often have only one medically trained person. The pilot clinic in Ghana will gather data for a year; that data, in turn, will help USDFA expand its efforts into other nations such as Tanzania, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Press Release |

| New online social network for charity sector |
Dublin-based Ammado is trialling a new online social network specifically for charity staff and supporters in the UK and internationally. Over 250 nonprofits around the world are using it in advance of its launch in December.
The Resource Alliance, which stages the annual International Fundraising Congress this month, is inviting all 900 delegates to become members of Ammado and use it to network with each other.
Once they have created their own profile on the site, currently in beta testing, delegates will be able to see who else is attending, send messages to fundraisers from similar causes, organise themselves into national groups or create online debates.
Ammado follows the launch of Forum3 Network, an integrated online recruitment and social networking resource from Charity People in the UK. That differs from Ammado in that it is directed primarily at charity sector staff rather than their supporters and donors.
Ammado's upcoming launch comes as many fundraisers and donors embrace online social networks like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.
