CROSS BORDER TALK

Nonprofits Worldwide Brace for Fallout From Financial crisis
In the twelve months ending November 2007, New York City-based Lehman Brothers distributed $39 million in corporate contributions and grants. Earlier this week, however, the fabled financial services firm filed for bankruptcy, causing alarm at nonprofit organizations that depend on its support, Bloomberg.com reports.
Through the Lehman Brothers Foundation, which had assets of $20.9 million as of November 2006, the company supported more than two hundred nonprofits a year, most of them recommended by Lehman employees. One of those, DonorsChoose, was awarded $500,000 — or 7 percent of the organization's most recent operating — by the foundation each of the last three years. Lehman, the nonprofit's largest corporate benefactor, had pledged another $500,000 for 2009, which DonorsChoose founder Charles Best said was key to the organization's anticipated national expansion.
Other beneficiaries include City Harvest, the Fund for Public Schools, and the Robin Hood Foundation, which funds a variety of programs and counts Lehman CEO Richard Fuld among its board members. The company has also contributed $375,000 over the past three years to the international humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders

US gives $1bn to rebuild Georgia
The US has announced $1bn (£564m) of aid to Georgia for reconstruction after the conflict with Russia. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the aid would be used to rebuild houses and infrastructure - but not for military purposes. Georgia has requested $2bn in funding from the international community.
Fighting between Russia and Georgia began on 7 August after the Georgian military tried to retake the breakaway region of South Ossetia by force.
Russian forces launched a counter-attack and the conflict ended with the ejection of Georgian troops from both South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia. Russia has since recognised the independence of both regions.
Announcing the aid package, Ms Rice said the US was "responding to what we consider to be urgent needs"."With our full support and the support of the entire free world, a democratic Georgia will survive, will rebuild and will thrive."

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also announced that Georgia is to receive a $750m (£422m) loan. The IMF agreed in principle to offer the help amid concerns that Georgia's growth would be seriously hampered by the recent war.
The US announcement came on the day Vice-President Dick Cheney began a visit in the region - but not Russia. Mr Cheney will next go to Georgia and Ukraine. In Georgia, he is expected to stress US support for President Mikhail Saakashvili - the man the Kremlin dismissed on Tuesday 4th Septemer as a "political corpse" whose leadership it did not recognise. Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev has also accused the US of helping Tbilisi build its war machine and called on America to review its relations with the Georgian authorities.
Faced with a chorus of international calls for Russia's isolation, Mr Medvedev has said Moscow does not fear being expelled from the G8 group of rich nations nor does it fear Nato cutting ties with his country. [Read more]

Aid Agencies Launch CO2 Program to Benefit the Developing World

A London-based coalition of aid agencies is launching a carbon-offset program designed to marry emissions savings with help for people living with the effects of climate change, Reuters reports.
Coordinated by the New Economics Foundation and the International Institute for Environment and Development, the international coalition will work to address the concern that existing trade in carbon credits excludes the world’s poorest communities, which are most at risk from the impact of global warming. While conventional carbon offsetting has focused mostly on promoting renewable energy, the new program will combine measures to curb carbon dioxide emissions with efforts to enable vulnerable individuals to cope with climate-related problems they are already experiencing.
Over the coming year, the coalition’s partners, including UNICEF, Greenpeace, CARE International, and Trócaire, will test pilot programs in regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America that are expected to be hardest hit by the effects of climate change. The projects will prioritize adaptation — for example, teaching children in India to swim so they can survive floods — as well as initiatives to curb carbon dioxide emissions, such as providing solar-powered lights.

Google.org Leads Effort to Use Weather Data to Fight Disease

As floods, drought, and variable weather increase, Google.org is leading an effort to look at the effects of climate change on the distribution and severity of diseases such as cholera, Rift Valley fever, and malaria, the New York Times reports.
This month Google.org will convene African health, weather, insect, and climate experts to identify research gaps and opportunities for collaboration to help address deteriorating meteorological systems on the continent. Increasingly, the scant data gathered from such systems is failing to reach health officials who could use it to detect disease outbreaks before they become epidemics. Other international groups also are focusing on weather data collection.

Developing World 'Poorer Than We Thought,' Report Reveals

New data released by the World Bank estimates that the number of poor people around the world is far higher than originally estimated. The number of poor people in 2005 is now estimated at 1.4 billion, an increase of 500 million from earlier estimates of 948 million.
According to Asma Lateef, director of Bread for the World Institute, this data gives a more accurate picture of how widespread poverty is and reflects improved ways of measuring the cost of living in developing countries and a larger set of household surveys in more countries. "It suggests that the earlier measure of extreme poverty, the number of people who live on less than $1 a day, underestimated the cost of living in developing countries. The new poverty line is $1.25 a day."
The World Bank report, "The Developing World is Poorer Than We Thought, But No Less Successful in the Fight against Poverty," recalculates poverty rates for the last 25 years and finds that although the number of people living in poverty is higher under this new measure, we have seen an overall, long-term decline in the number of people living in poverty, from 1.9 billion in 1981 to 1.4 billion.
The world has been making steady progress in reducing poverty since 1981 at about one percent a year. At this rate, the world is on target to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of people living in poverty by 2015 from... [Read more]
