Gates Commits $255 Million to Help Eradicate Polio
The fight to eradicate polio has been given a significant monetary boost through new funds pledged by the Bill Gates' charitable foundation, Rotary International and the British and German governments.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded US$255 million to Rotary International, which will match it with US$100 million to be raised over the next three years. At the same time the British and German governments awarded £100 million (US$137 million) and €100 million (US$129 million) respectively to bring the total committed by the four parties to US$630 million.
The grant follows a US$100 million pledge made a year ago by Gates' foundation to Rotary International, which the organization also committed to matching with the same amount of money.
Since stepping down from day-to-day control of Microsoft, Bill Gates has devoted more of his time to the foundation that is named for him and his wife. Several main areas are targeted by the foundation's grants, including global health care, of which polio is a part. The health care work also includes HIV/AIDS, malaria, pneumonia and maternal and child health care.

Gates Foundation Pledges $35 Million for Banking Innovation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is best known for its work combating malaria, AIDS and other diseases. But the world’s richest charitable foundation has been quietly expanding into other problems of the developing world and this week announced an effort to bring banking, including savings accounts, to the poor, The Associated Press said.
It may be hard to understand how savings is even an issue for the people who live on less than $2 a day, said Bob Christen, who directs the Gates Foundation’s financial services initiative. However, access to a safe place to store money is a top priority of poor people around the world, he said.
This week, the foundation announced a $35 million grant to help facilitate agent banking services already being developed in Africa, Asia and South and Central America. Mr. Christen told The Associated Press that the Gates grant will provide assistance to many organizations through the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, whose efforts are historic in the world of banking, and will help people climb out of poverty, save for their children’s education, build their businesses and plan. Gates-Funded Project to Demonstrate Link Between Reliable Transport, Improved Health Care in Africa
UK-based Riders for Health, an operator of healthcare delivery transport systems in sub-Saharan Africa, has announced a five-year, $11.9 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support a partnership with Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.Organizations working in Africa often lack the funding and expertise to operate vehicles properly in difficult conditions, leaving resources wasted and people wanting for health care. To provide reliable motorized mobility for African healthcare workers, Riders has developed an innovative technical system for operating motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles so they rarely break down. The system incorporates regularly scheduled preventive and long-range mechanical maintenance as well as comprehensive safe driving and riding training.
With funding from the Gates Foundation, Riders' teams in the United Kingdom and Africa will work with the business school's Global Supply Chain Management Forum to measure and demonstrate the link between reliable transport and improved healthcare coverage, particularly in rural communities. Riders hopes to prove that its work results in at least a 45 percent increase in health workers' productivity, a 30 percent increase in coverage of key healthcare interventions, and at least an 80 percent improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of vehicle fleet management.

Recession Not Leading to Wave of Mergers
As the economic crisis began to squeeze foundations and nonprofits last fall, predictions of a wave of mergers spread through the nonprofit sector. But in the months since, no such wave has emerged, at least not on the scale predicted, Crain's Chicago Business reports.
According to surveys of nonprofit leaders conducted in November 2008 and May 2009 by the Boston-based Bridgespan Group, roughly 20 percent of respondents were considering a strategic merger or alliance as the recession deepened. But a March 2009 survey by the Nonprofit Finance Fund found that only 5 percent of the nearly one thousand organizations it surveyed had merged or intended to merge with another organization.
The reasons given are varied. If the logistics of a merger are daunting to some, so, too, are the costs. A merger can cost upward of $250,000, depending on the size of the organizations involved. And while funders often express interest in having grantees streamline their operations, there isn't enough foundation money available to help all the organizations that want to merge, said Jean Butzen, president of Mission Plus Strategy, a Chicago-area consulting firm that advises clients on mergers and alliances.

Coke goes paperless for grant applications
The Coca-Cola Co. has adopted an online application system for nonprofit organizations that want grants, donations or sponsorships from the beverage giant.
Atlanta-based Coca-Cola said the paperless system, developed by Cybergrants, will end the need to process the more than 10,000 paper applications it gets every year. The online application system creates a single entry-point for nonprofit organizations around the world to apply for support from Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), its global foundation or seven regional foundations.
“The Coca-Cola Company is committed to giving back a portion of what we earn each year to make a unique and sustainable difference in communities worldwide,” said Ingrid Saunders, chair of The Coca-Cola Foundation, in a statement. “In 2008, The company disbursed more than $82 million in charitable contributions. The online application will simplify the request process, speed the response time back to our community partners, and assist community organizations in identifying our priority areas.”
Organizations seeking support for community sponsorships, in-kind donations, fundraising dinners and or cash contributions can click here to complete an online application.

Madoff Liquidator May 'Claw Back' Money From Nonprofits
Irving Picard, the trustee overseeing the liquidation of Bernard Madoff's investment business, might sue nonprofits that received more money from Madoff than they had invested with the imprisoned con man to force them to return the difference, Bloomberg.com reports.
To date, Picard has only pursued groups that he claims should have known about the fraud. In May, for example, he sued longtime Madoff investor Jeffry Picower and his foundation for allegedly taking a fake profit of $6.7 billion over a twenty-year period.
According to William Josephson, a lawyer at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver, & Jacobson who previously ran the New York State Attorney General's Charities Bureau, state law does not differentiate between nonprofits and other institutions. So even if investors weren't aware of Madoffs $65 billion Ponzi scheme, Picard must file "claw back" suits against them and pursue the return of funds paid out in the six years before Madoffs arrest. "Picard has an obligation to the bankruptcy estate to collect all the assets he can find and, in theory, he has to treat everyone the same way," said Josephson.
One possible target is Hadassah, which invested $40 million with Madoff and received $130 million in profits. Picard, however, has been cagey in discussing which nonprofits might be sued. "We will look at charities on a case-by-case basis," he said, "before determining what action may be appropriate."

UN-Backed Partnership Promises Education for Millions More Children
A United Nations-backed campaign to bring education to millions of children in Africa is expanding to reach millions more after exceeding its initial target by raising more than $50 million.
The Schools for Africa partnership, set up in 2004 by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) and the Hamburg Society to raise money to help over 4 million children in Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe, signed a memorandum of understanding on the expansion in New York today.
The partnership aims to provide a more safe, protective and accessible learning environment for children and it reached its goal of raising $50 million, one year in advance. The programme has amassed $71 million to date.
Fundraising for phase II of the scheme will be launched between 2010 and 2013, and will also support Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. By then the partnership will cover 11 countries - encompassing not just Eastern and Southern Africa, but also the West and Central African regions.
The Schools for Africa partnership attributes its fundraising success to the efforts of 26 national committees around the world.

Tired of constantly battling to raise enough funds to keep your education program running another year? Then this is one conference you shouldn’t miss!
Education That Pays For Itself 2009 will take place in Ecuador from the 8th – 10th December and bring together almost 100 participants including some of the world’s leading experts on Financially Sustainable Education. Financially Sustainable Education addresses these problems directly. This year's theme of “Income Generation for Education” recognizes the double role of school businesses, not only as sources of program funding, but even more importantly in providing a real-life learning environment for skills and entrepreneurship education.

Virgin Money Giving opens to charities
Fundraising website claims it will undercut rival Justgiving. Virgin Money Giving, the new not-for-profit online donation service that it says will undercut Justgiving, has opened to charities.
Virgin Money, the finance arm of the Virgin Group and sponsor of the London Marathon from 2010, says its service will reduce the cost of raising money online by up to 60 per cent.
The site allows charities to publish their own pages and send out email alerts with links to them.
Fundraisers are not yet able to start using the site, but Virgin Money said it would announce the start of that service shortly.
A spokesman for Virgin Money said the service would raise more money for charities than other online giving sites because it would look only to cover its costs. He said it would charge a £100 set-up fee for charities and a 2 per cent transaction fee on donations, but would not charge for administering Gift Aid.
Justgiving typically charges 90p to process a £10 donation that is eligible for Gift Aid.
The Virgin Money spokesman said it would also allow charities to view data about their fundraisers and donors through customisable reports.
Virgin founder Richard Branson said: "As a not-for-profit business, charities can be confident that Virgin Money Giving's fees are as low as we can possibly make them so they receive the maximum amount possible from every donation. For every £100m raised, more than £5m extra will find its way to the intended causes."

New website aims to raise millions for charity
See the Difference site will show films of charity projects and encourage people to give
A new website set up to raise £250m for charities by establishing a video library about their work will go live later this year.
The site, See the Difference, will feature a collection of short films through which charities will be able to explain to the public how their projects are run.
Registered charities will be able to upload their videos to the site and users will be able to search the films by charity, subject, location or even how it will make them feel before viewing them and deciding whether to make a donation to the charity. Charity registration is free.
Users will be able to make donations on the site in a service run by Virgin Money Giving, the newly established fundraising site. The website is expected to be up and running later this year and to be formally launched in 2010. A See the Difference spokeswoman said the organisation expected to meet its £250m target within five years.

YouTube of philanthropy will allow everyone to be a philanthropist
A new e-philanthropy initiative aims to be the ‘YouTube of philanthropy’ by allowing users to find out about charitable projects around the world in detail and donate to them online. Users can also submit video clips of basic needs projects from around the world by creating an account on the website, which aims to create a global philanthropic community online.
Launched in August, World Flix currently features video clips of projects in Uganda, Haiti and Tibet that require micro grants of up to $5,000 (£3,100) to address food, water, shelter, sanitation or healthcare basic needs. More projects are expected soon.
Through World Flix, donors can give to the project of their choice and, once the entire fund is collected, see their contribution at work through further video clips. Donors to the Bwindi Hospital project in Uganda will see the purchase, delivery and use of the mosquito nets they help purchase.
World Flix offers this level of feedback to donors without the means to give huge sums. Additionally it will give 100% of donated money to each project directly, covering its costs through events, grants and World Flix merchandise sales.

Case Foundation Launches Initiative to Help Nonprofits Leverage Social Media
The Washington, D.C.-based Case Foundation has announced the launch of a month-long initiative, Gear Up for Giving, designed to help nonprofits leverage social media to raise money and awareness.
Although research has shown that nonprofits are adopting social media tools at a faster rate than most Fortune 500 companies, many nonprofits still struggle to harness those tools in a way that increases awareness, donations, and engagement. To address the problem, Gear Up for Giving will offer training, expert advice, and resources designed to help nonprofits and individuals navigate the world of social media.
The initiative precedes the launch of the next America's Giving Challenge, which the foundation debuted in 2007 as a way to galvanize nonprofit engagement with social media tools.

Corporate Giving Strategies Shifting as Economy Weakens, Report Finds
Although many corporate charitable giving departments are facing reduced budgets and fewer staff on the payroll, corporations remain committed to supporting their communities, a new report from the LBG Research Institute finds.
Based on a survey of more than a hundred major U.S. corporations and corporate foundations, the report, Making the Most of What We Have: Corporate Giving in the New Economy, found that more than 84 percent of corporations are encouraging their employees to increase their volunteering to offset a decline in cash giving, 15 percent are increasing in-kind donations such as meeting space and office equipment, and 12 percent are stepping up their product donations. In addition, almost half the corporations surveyed said they are emphasizing partnerships with nonprofits over straight cash donations, a third said they are actively seeking new nonprofit partners to better match their strategic goals, and half are paying more attention to outcome measurement and nonprofit accountability. Substantial donor legislation to be reformed soon
HM Revenue & Customs is expected to propose changes to laws governing donations from major funders in the Autumn.
The proposals were developed with a series of focus groups that included charities, accountants, lawyers and major donors themselves, and examined how the legislation could be made more effective.
Substantial donor legislation penalises charities if they make payments to anyone who has made a donation of £25,000 to the organisation in a single calendar year.
It has been criticised by sector experts, who say many charities are unwittingly caught by it, and that many could be disproportionately penalised for making legitimate transactions.
"We've held several meetings in quick succession," said Nick Brooks, head of not-for-profit at accountancy firm Kingston Smith and one of the focus group members.
"It's been very productive as far as we're concerned, although there are still several hoops that have to be jumped through before anything can be changed."
Brooks said he thought charities need not worry about the legislation as long as they had no intent to carry out fraudulent activity.
"The legislation is there to stop wrongdoing, and if wrongdoing exists it can still be punished," he said. "But I think transactions in good faith should be safe."

Only four of the list were from outside the US - three German donors and one from Hong Kong.
Bill Gates topped the list, with his $28 bn (£17.1 bn) donation to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. George Soros is number two with $7.2 bn (£4.4 bn) in donations. Warren Buffett, who pledged $31 bn (£18.9 bn) to the Gates Foundation in 2006 is number four on the list, reflecting the $6.7 bn (£4.1 bn) he has actually given so far.

Wealthy Donors Keep On Giving
The great recession doesn't put too much of a dent into philanthropic plans, finds a new survey from Barclays Wealth. Despite managing through the worst economic conditions the U.S. has seen since the Great Depression, high-net-worth individuals are still committed to charitable giving. In fact, in many cases, they are now more generous than in years past, according to results of a survey of 500 high-net-worth and ultra-high -net-worth individuals in the U.S. and U.K. conducted by Barclays Wealth and Ledbury Research. Click here to view the complete survey results.
Barclays found that 75% of high-net-worth individuals (with average investable assets of $5.4 million) do not plan to donate less money in the current economic environment. Although about 23% of the high-net-worth individuals surveyed reduced donations, only about 10% planned a large cutback. (Charitable giving is actually one of the last expenses--just before education costs--that investors are willing to scrap in tough times. Luxury goods are the first to get eliminated, followed by personal staff and dining out.) [Read more]

Google grants biased, report says
Google's grants program favors nonprofits run by whites and Asians, in effect is raising ad prices for African-American and Hispanic nonprofits, a new report says.
Over the past three years, Google has given away $300 million worth of free advertising on its site, says the report from TechMission, an association of Black and Latino-led nonprofits addressing the digital divide. That $300 million in advertising grants is used by recipient nonprofits to bid on specific search terms related to their organizations and missions. This practice has "flooded the market" for nonprofit ads with virtual dollars, the report says, forcing nonprofits that do not receive grants to pay more for search terms. TechMission estimates 95 percent of Google Grants recipients are nonprofits led by whites or Asians, and only five percent are led by African-Americans or Hispanics. This disparity means minority-led groups pay a "tax" because they pay "increased advertising fees to provide a subsidy to white-led nonprofits."

Ethiopian Government Suspends 42 NGOs As Hunger Worsens
Ethiopian authorities have suspended the operations of 42 non-governmental organisations allegedly involved in activities that are "out of their mandate" in the Southern region of the country.
The Nation has learnt that two local gender rights organisations are among the suspended NGOs.
The Ethiopian government moved to revoke the licences of the NGOs following accusation of their alleged involvement in reporting human rights abuses in the rural areas. The Ethiopian government publicly accused some NGOs of supplying "inaccurate" information to the United States' State Department, which was published in March 2009.
Meanwhile, United Nations humanitarian office in Ethiopia has warned that the number of people who need food aid in Ethiopia will increase to 6.2 million unless more food aid can be secured.
The recent number of people requiring food aid has been 4.9 million and now the country needs additional 390,000 metric tonnes of emergency food aid for the coming three months.
Ethiopia leads the region by registering an average 10 per cent annual economic growth, has been avowed to end hunger but has achieved less success.
