| Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Launches $100 Million Initiative to Strengthen African Health Systems |
|
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has announced a $100 million initiative of at least five years to address the most critical obstacles to the delivery of effective and essential health services in sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation's African Health Initiative will provide funding to African-led partnerships working on strategies to overcome problems such as fragile, fragmented national health systems and a shortage of healthcare workers. Grants will be awarded to create population health implementation and training partnerships designed to carry out strategies to reduce mortality and morbidity in African districts of at least 250,000 people, identify and address health systems' weaknesses and funding gaps, and conduct research to be shared with the larger health service community. |
| Pfizer Launches Five-Year, Three-Country Malaria Initiative |
Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. has announced a five-year, three-country initiative to help address critical gaps in malaria treatment and education.
Highlighted during last year's Clinton Global Initiative, the Mobilize Against Malaria program will provide funding, evaluation support, and the technical expertise of Pfizer Global Health Fellows to malaria initiatives in Kenya, Ghana, and Senegal. Each of Pfizer's programs in the three countries aims to reduce the rate of malaria morbidity and mortality by improving symptom recognition, treatment, and referral through training and community mobilization campaigns.
Local partners in each country will oversee the program and evaluation efforts. In Ghana, the partners include the informal sector of licensed chemical sellers (LCS) — more than seven thousand retail outlets found in almost every community — working with Family Health International and the Ghana Social Marketing Foundation. In Senegal, Intrahealth will train community health workers and nurses and document the benefits of malaria treatment messaging in the Tambacounda region. And in Kenya, Population Services International will work to promote symptom recognition and treatment-seeking behaviors at the household level, with an emphasis on pregnant women and children under five.

| Blogs, Social-Networking Sites Link Youth to Philanthropy |
Young donors and volunteers, snubbing traditional appeals from nonprofit organizations, are satisfying their philanthropic urges on the Internet, turning to blogs and social-networking sites to spread the word about their favorite causes, the Wall Street Journal reports.
While the donors are spreading the word, an increasing number of charities — from start-ups to long-established organizations — are launching profiles on Web sites such as MySpace and Facebook, hoping that young people will link to their pages. Some are also encouraging bloggers to mention the causes on their sites, which has helped raise thousands of dollars in small donations.
In May, Project Agape, a social-action start-up, launched a new program on Facebook called "Causes," in which users create online communities to advocate for issues, charities, and political candidates. Since then, the program has attracted more than 2.5 million users and raised approximately $300,000 for the organizations and candidates. In late 2006, MySpace launched its Impact Awards in which users vote to recognize individuals and nonprofits that have successfully used the site to make a difference.
